Morro Bay is a small town located in the Stanislaus County, California, area. The name comes from Spanish for "Moor" or "Island". The first European to visit Morro Bay was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 14 of 1542. He sighted the Islet of San Miguel and named it after this saint's feast day. Morro Bay was founded by Jedediah Smith on November 12, 1824 as a post office called Rodriguezville. It became a town on December 1, 1827 when the first school opened there. On July 8, 1850, an Earthquake rocked Northern California andmorro bay felt the quake with great force; however no damage was done to property or people in Morro Bay. The last postmaster at Rodriguezville resigned in 1861 following requests from residents for a mail service that would avoid wagons carrying goods down the gently rolling hills of Stanislaus County during winter months. After his resignation, Smith donated land to create what is now Morro Bay High School which opened its doors in 1865.
The Morro Bay area was first settled by the Ohlone people in the late 18th century. The region was later occupied by various Native American groups, including the Tongva, Chumash and Mission Indians. The first Europeans to visit Morro Bay were Spanish missionaries in 1769. By 1821, the town of San Lorenzo had been established on the bay's mainland. In 1846, California became a U.S. state and Morro Bay became part of San Francisco County. In 1928, the Morro Bay Bridge was completed connecting San Francisco with Morro Bay. In 1941, during World War II, Japanese forces bombed and destroyed most of Santa Cruz County in Northern California; much of Morro Bay remained unscathed.
