Morro Bay, California is a small town located in Marin County, California, about northeast of San Francisco. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. Morro Bay has been inhabited by the Ohlone people since before European settlement began. The first permanent European residents were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1769. In 1821, the United States acquired land east of San Francisco for $1 million and renamed it Alameda County. With its nucleus of mission churches and military-town atmosphere, Morro Bay developed into one of America's most prosperous agricultural communities during the 19th century. However, economic decline and social unrest led to a series of violence and fires in the early 20th century that destroyed many homes and businesses. In 1936–37, construction began on what would become known as Golden Gate Bridge; however, because of World War II there was significant delays both in completing the bridge and in getting it opened to traffic. On May 14, 1945 – less than two years after America's entry into World War II – construction finally ended when Japanese soldiers stormed ashore at Morro Bay while American forces were battle-fitting for an amphibious assault against Japan near Sausalito; this event is commonly cited as beginning the end of Marin County's wine country heritage. After World War IImorro bay experienced rapid growth with new housing developments being built along Highway 1A (the present day route US 101) which linked it with Stockton to the north and Vallejo to the south The last major development happened during the late 1980s when developers rezoned part of MorroBay for high-density residential use; this resulted in increased traffic on State Route OneA which caused some issues with infrastructure planners trying to meet demand without adversely affecting environment or public health
