In 1918–1920, after World War I ended, various companies developed beach areas adjacent to or within Morro Bay: Kaiser Aluminum Company built a factory on West Beach; American Canning & packing company constructed a cannery on East Beach; Standard Oil set up a refinery on Long Beach Boulevard; General Electric erected an electric plant near Point Loma; and Alcoa set up another refinery on North Shore Drive near Carlsbad Caverns National Park

On July 24, 1848, a group of nine California gold miners set out from Morro Bay on the Goodwin Sands to explore the new land they had discovered. The party was composed of four men and three women. They were led by John Sutter, an American who had earlier founded the town of Stockton in Contra Costa County. On their way they encountered a group of Indians who said they knew nothing about gold but were willing to guide them to it. After some time they came across a small stream that led into a large gulch. As they climbed up the ravine, they heard shouting from below and saw people coming down with guns. It turned out to be friendly Indians looking for food for their families back at their reservation in Sonoma Valley. When the Californians reached the top of the ravine, they found themselves face-to-face with what is now known as Morro Bay National Monument
