The order led to increased tension between U.S. and Mexico over border issues, and skirmishes occurred along the Mexican-American border throughout 1865 and 1866. In 1868, California seceded from the United States and formed its own state, with Morro Bay as its capital. The town developed rapidly due to its location on a natural harbor that could serve as a staging ground for shipping operations between San Francisco and Mexicali. By 1880, Morro Bay had become one of California's largest towns with a population of about 507 residents. During World War II, Morro Bay played an important role in naval activities off California's coast. The town was home to various navy yards and shipyards during World War II which produced more than $14 million worth of products statewide alone (including airplanes). After the war, Morro Bay experienced rapid growth as new businesses began opening up around town including supermarkets, nightlife venues and medical facilities among others. However, despite these positive developments,Morro Bay also faced several challenges such as economic recession during the early 2000s; budget cuts at local government agencies; increased traffic congestion caused by expanded development outside of town boundaries;and environmental degradation due to human activity such as noise pollution from factories located within walking distance ofMorro Bay
