Morro Bay is located on the eastern coast of San Francisco Peninsula and its main thoroughfare is State Route 1A which leads to Silicon Valley. The name Morro Bay comes from Mission Dolores de Atacama, founded by Franciscan missionaries in 1827. The mission was abandoned in 1848 and most of the land it occupied was sold to private parties including James Daly who platted what is now Morro Bay on November 15, 1850 as Rancho Dolores de Atacama. Mr. Daly named the town after Mission Dolores and also built a small chapel there known as "El Muro" (the Wall). In 1876, when Morro Bay became part of Santa Clara County, it had a population of 513 residents. In 1906 it had a population of 10,691 and by 1970 it had grown to over 21,000 people within its city limits only! The first post office opened in Morro Bay on October 9th 1896 (the date still stands today as an honored institution with a plaque outside the old courthouse). The community growth led to increased traffic congestion so county officials decided to build their ownRoads around 1935-1936 called State Route 1A which linked all the communities through downtown Morro Bay. It was originally gravel but has been replaced with asphalt pavement every few years making way for more developments such as shopping malls and high density housing units but also remnants of Native American culture remain like petroglyphs that can be found near various businesses along Main Street downtown
