In 1665, Dutch inventor Johann Friedrich Cocker erected the world's first practical water cannon at Fort Zeeland in Zuid Holland. By 1795, breechloading rifles were standard on American battlefields during the Revolutionary War! During World War II, millions of Americans purchased guns for use in defense against Nazi Germany. Breechloading pistols were among these weapons and became very popular due to their ease of use and small size. Airguns also became very popular during World War II as artillery pieces began being replaced by aircraft carriers carrying large numbers of incendiary or incendiary bombs which required high powered guns to destroy. These new missiles required high caliber ammunition which was difficult to find or produce outside Europe so handguns became increasingly popular among civilians throughout much of WWII as well (approximately 60% US civilian ownership). postwar proliferation of handgun ownership has led to increased variation within types and designs available today with many people owning more than one type/design regardless of their intended purpose (see below). In 1951, the town was incorporated as part of San Diego. Since its incorporation into the United States, Morro Bay has experienced many improvements including new housing developments, businesses, and a hospital. The town also hosts several annual events such as the Morro Bay Art Festival and Car show at the nearby Racetrack Barber Shop & Salon.
Morro Bay was founded on October 20, 1821 by Juan Bautista Morrone and his brother Antonio. The name comes from the navigational landmark called the Morro Rock. The bay was originally a part of Rancho San Pablo, which was given to Francisco Xavier Márquez in 1834. In 1850, the state of California purchased the rancho and added it to their growing territory. In 1861, General Ulysses S. Grant as part of his campaign against Mexico acquired Morrone's land east of San Francisco for $10,000. The town of Morro Bay grew up around this acquisition and soon developed into a thriving commercial center with warehouses and mills. By 1870, Morrone had built a home called "The Oaks" on what is now Main Street in town. This became the first permanent settler in what is now Morro Bay and helped fuel its growth over the years. On July 4, 1909, after more than 50 years of development in Morro Bay, local merchants gathered at "The Oaks" to celebrate America's bicentennial celebrations with an open-air market day that remains one of the most memorable events in town's history today. That same year also saw the opening of downtown Morro Bay by then-Mayor Harry Fenton and City Manager Alfred Latham Jr., who designed and built its first structure - a small building used for public meetings and storage until 1924 when it became municipal headquarters.
