Morgan Hill is a small town located in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. The population was 24,873 at the 2010 census. It is considered a bedroom community for the city of San Francisco. The first European to explore and map Morgan Hill was Juan Bautista de Anza on his journey from Santa Cruz to Monterey in 1769. In 1815, Captain John Fenton discovered oil wells in what is now Morgan Hill while exploring nearby Vallejo. A post office was established at the site in 1828, and development proceeded rapidly until World War II when most of the town's growth stopped because of military housing requirements. Today, much of Morgan Hill remains agricultural with some light industry based businesses scattered throughout the townscape. The history of Morgan Hill can be traced back to its founding as an agricultural village named Spanish Flat about three miles northeast of present-day San Francisco on November 8, 1857 by Major George Waddell and five other settlers led by Dr. Cesar Chavez Sr., who had purchased Rancho adobe land east of Mission Creek from José Joaquin Abreu near today's Union City police station. The name derived from Mount Diablo which loomed prominently above their settlement during that early period due to its height (at 4,411 feet) and fertile soils dating back to ancient Coast Miocene epoch sediments deposited there around 8 million years ago according to local legend The village grew quickly due largely to two factors: First, it lay within rifle range of then-large ranches operated by Pacheco family members; second, there were few transportation options available other than walking or horseback riding which required time and effort to reach civilization . When General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Fort Point on December 12th 1858 with orders compelling him to abandon all civilian resistance against Mexican forces occupying California he found only 7 men remaining loyal Californios living south of Market Street including Chavez who had organized them into Company H under Captains Manuel Nieto and Miguel Hostetler By 1862 more than 200 residents had moved into Spanish Flat including future Mayor James Mapes among others With no water or power available they petitioned United States Government for help but received no response so they began drilling for water sources themselves using whatever tools they could find including scythes , hoes , chisels and pickaxes . By 1865 they had drilled 9 wells but only one produced enough water even though itmouths approximately 400 feet below ground . However this one well did not produce anyxious gas which may have been responsible for genesisof local nickname "Gas Town" as several adjacent wells yielded similar results before finally being plugged in 1866 despite extensive searching .. Gridley Spa Road running through present day Spanish Flat opened up new hunting grounds for deer and bear during early 20th century when larger towns such as Oakland filled with people seeking easy access highway opportunities .) After years struggling unsuccessfully with elusive government assistance their efforts paid off when private enterprise became interested in developing the area resulting in numerous businesses opening up along Railroad Avenue betweenSpanish Flat Rd & Shawangunk Ave starting about 1925 onwards especially after newly founded University Of California Redwood Valley opened nearby ) From hereon out various waves of migration followed ensuing job opportunities both good (manufacturing/processing goods associated with major university campuses such as UC Berkeley & Stanford), bad ( cheap labor used throughout entire Bay Area during WWII),and nonexistent (during quiet period following war most residents returned home) until recently when high school students moving away continueto impact population size
