Morgan Hill is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first people to live in Morgan Hill were the Ohlone people who lived along the frontier between Alameda County and Contra Costa County. The first white person to live in Morgan Hill was Captain George Hargrave, who settled on what is now Webster Street in 1853. In 1870, John Strode built his mill on present-day Webster Avenue near the edge of town. In 1876, James Waugh bought land east of town from George Hargrave for $2,000 and started to build a house called Waugh's House which still stands today on Park Avenue just east of North Main Street. In 1887 he sold his land to Charles Bickford for $10,000 and began building what would become known as Bickford's Campground. In 1896, Edward Sanger leased land north of town from Jules de Rothschild for $15 per acre and began building Sanger's Farm which still stands today on Northeast Fourth Street just north of Interstate 80 (now I-880). In 1913 Edmund Ayer founded Ayer Paper Company with Sam Rayburn as its first president and continued operations until 1923 when it merged with Dow Corning Corporation to form Dow Corning & Co., Inc., one of America’s largest industrial companies with annual sales over $20 billion*.* * Note: These figures do not include Dow Corning Glass Museum or other subsidiaries
Morgan Hill is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 25,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and the Greater Bay Area. The first permanent people to live in Morgan Hill were the Ohlone Indians who traded with Mission Dolores for goods from Alta California in 1817-1818. The land around present day Morgan Hill was first settled by Franciscans in 1776 as part of Rancho Seco Mexican Land Grantee Jose Feliciano's attempt to build a mission near Point Reyes Station on Humboldt Bay. The town began as an agricultural community with fruit orchards, hayfields and cattle ranches until World War II when industry came to dominate the economy. In 1951, Mayor John Fenton declared that Morgan Hill would become "the most important center in eastern Contra Costa County" due to its location on Interstate 80 and its potential for growth in housing, retail and service industries such as auto manufacturing and information technology. Morgan Hill became one of Silicon Valley's early satellite towns after being transferred from Newark, New Jersey to Contra Costa County by then-Governor Ronald Reagan in 1984 during his effort to promote economic development within the countywide region known as "the 3rd Coast". According to some sources, much of Silicon Valley's computer industry originated here including Apple Inc., Intel Corp., IBM Corp., Oracle Corporation and Microsoft Corporation among others. In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place throughout downtown Morgan Hill with new restaurants (Café du Monde; L’Atelier) movie theaters (Palladium Park IMAX), office parks (Mercuryplex) and more residences developments than ever before including upscale single family homes built by leading developers such as Lennar Homes (Alameda), Pulte Homes (Morgan Hills), TD Ameritrade inc.(Union Square) – homebuilder behind Laurel Heights/Noble Farms/Bay Meadows/Fremont Gardens neighborhood just south of downtown – along with high-end apartments plotted by Jed Kolko Architects which forms what is now known as South Beach neighborhood east of Fourth Street between Union Avenue & Geary Boulevard close to BART stations BART station configuration: 4 Berryessa St.: This address served Amtrak / SJ TRANSIT lines El Camino Real & Royce Ave./ Embarcadero BART station area: 2 Santana Row.: This address served Caltrain lines Ulysses Smedley Blvd./ Embarcadero BART station area From this point south all trains go thru Hayward Diridon Station

Morgan Hill was founded in 1853 by Captain George A. Smith and his wife, Julia Purdy. The town was named for General James K. Morgan, who had helped to Belle Isle blow up in 1812. In 1865, the town became an independent city under the leadership of Mayor John W. Folsom. In 1942, during World War II, Morgan Hill was a target of bombing raids by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) Eighth Air Force. The bombers attacked Morgan Hill's chemical plants and other buildings near downtown, but no injuries were reported as a result of the attacks. The population of Morgan Hill decreased from its high peak in 1950 to just over 1,000 residents by 1990; however, it still retains significant historical significance because it is home to one of California's most important communities of Armenian Catholics –one of only a few remaining populations with origins dating back to Ottoman Turkey – and because many businesses are located in downtown Morgan Hill today.
