At its peak in 1910 it had a population of 508 residents and employed 20 men as merchants and clerks or farmers. In 1926 General Motors announced plans to build a new plant in Oakland but due to concerns about traffic congestion GM withdrew its application for Morgan Hill site instead choosing Livermore Valley . In 1937 Caltech began construction of their then largest engineering project when they acquired 2,000 acres (800 hectares) east of town near Menlo Park for $10 million dollars which would become what is now campus oak Grove . With this land purchase came increased funding for research by Caltech which would later lead to them becoming one of Silicon Valley's most well-known universities During World War II much progress was made in making fighter jets such as Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters operational thanks to advances being made at Caltech through technology developed by Professor John von Neumann while working on defense projects with Harry Truman’s wartime Manhattan Project
