Morgan Hill, California is a small city located in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. It is part of theSan Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area and had a population of 146,827 as of 2018. The name Morgan Hill comes from Spanish for "hillsocks". The first post office in the area was established in 1849. From 1851 to 1865, it was called Hercules. In 1868, it became known as Albion after Albion Mills which existed at that time on what is now Market Street. The name change came about because Mrs. Albion Cook who lived there at that time wanted her children's names to reflect their community's history and culture instead of just hers. In 1916, when the town implemented a school system with four grades and one station house, Mrs. Cook donated land east of her home on Pacific Avenue to make room for the new school and she named the new school "Morgan Hill" after her donation. In 1922, a men's tuberculosis sanatorium opened up in nearby Lafayette Heights and soon became one of Northern California's most well known TB hospitals with over 1,500 beds available for patients treatment or caretakers such as families with sick members or those experiencing an emotional crisis due to TB infection or stress from other illnesses such as chickenpox or measles (mortality rates were high). By 1939 Morgan Hill had become so overcrowded that City Councilmember Dianne Feinstein proposed annexing it into Oakland proper so that more people could live closer together but this proposal was also met with resistance by then Mayor George Moscone who thought annexing would only lead to more crime and traffic congestionrather than addressing health concerns among Morgan Hill residents In 1951 Mayor Moscone approved a master plan submitted by city planners which recommended moving downtown Berkeley from its current location near International Boulevard due to increasing auto traffic caused by BART construction across nearby Telegraph Road The move was finally accomplished on July 16th1963 when Berkeley became Hayward County under newly created county government structure following passage of Proposition 13 voters passed via referendum campaign finance limits limiting property values within certain boundaries defined by zoning ordinances

It is named after James Morrison Morgan who developed the area in 1868. The first post office at Morgan Hill was established on November 8, 1872. The name change to its current form on May 15, 1899. A railroad line reached Morgan Hill by way of Hayward in 1887 and the community grew rapidly due to the increased trade and industry served by the railroad. In 1915, a new shopping center was built adjacent to the then existing First National Bank building which became known as "The Mall".
