Morgan Hill, California is a city located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 24,815 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city within Contra Costa County by area. The name "Morgan Hill" is derived from its original site on Mount Diablo, north of San Francisco, where Monterey Bay meets the Pacific Ocean. The name originated with the gold rush era when miners named their towns after hills in nearby Napa and Sonoma Counties. As early as 1849, there were plans to build a town on Mount Diablo in what is now Morgan Hill. In 1853, United States citizens James Fenton and George Washington Browne started construction of a fortification called Fort Murchison on the hill overlooking San Francisco Bay. When it became known that gold was being found near Sutro City, California (now Hayward), they abandoned their project and moved to Morgan Hill instead. On January 1st of each year since 1857 (the date of Mexican Independence from Spain), citizens have worn badges reading "GOLD DASH" in commemoration of this event. The first post office opened at Morgan Hill on December 3rd of that year under the name West Pointe Station. From 1861-1863 it served as an outpost for General John Cranch's cavalry brigade during the American Civil War due to its location between Concord and Pleasanton south of Central Avenue BART station BART). In 1876–77 two brothers – Jack and Alameda Bledsoe – built a sawmill on Mill Creek east of present day Highway 101 northwest of downtown Morgan Hill which created some controversy because it displaced nearly fifty homes next door to their mill while they were still building it; they eventually sold all rights to the creek bed to settlers before operations could begin completely or even partially due to these controversies . In 1903 local jeweler Gustavus Adolphus Siegel developed land northeast of downtown Morgan Hill along present day Interstate 80 for his planned $5 million mall which never materialized but adjacent development—including luxury housing developments such as Quail Hollow—did . By 1907 there were over 100 families living in downtown Morgan Hill according to one estimate although many had left for various reasons including wars abroad or economic depression back home [6] .
