One such landmark is Home Field Park which was built in 1924 as part of a park project funded by natural gas developers who wanted to commemorate Morgan Hill’s role as an important manufacturing center during the early 20th century. In 1820, Major General George Washington ordered the construction of a new set of guns known as “The Capitol Arsenal” in Washington D.C.. This target range became one of the most famous and popular target ranges in America during the 19th century because it allowed people from all parts of the country to shoot at large numbers of small animals without having to go too far away from their homes or villages. In 1853, the towns of Morgan Hill and San Anselmo were merged to form one municipality. The name “Morgan Hill” is likely derived from the Old Spanish word morada (a landing), which was also used for a small town in Contra Costa County. In 1856, a post office was established at Morgan Hill, and mail was delivered from San Francisco until 1865. The first school opened in Morgan Hill on December 1st, 1857. By 1860, there were ten homes in Morgan Hill and about sixty-eight people living there. The first store was built on Mayflower Road by J.M. Richardson and Wm Hennessey. The railroad arrived in the area in 1870 and soon transported goods to nearby counties such as Marin and Sonoma. With railroads came new opportunities for industry and commerce, which led to growth in the town of Morgan Hill over time. A flour mill opened in 1872 and soon became an important part of local economy; other businesses included a shoe factory, bank, livery stable, grocery store, brewery/distillery, cheese factory and more. In 1915-1916 four large estates were developed along Mayflower Road: Deerfield Farms (later known as Galaxy), Huntington Rancho (now known as Orinda Rancho), Bel Air Estate (now known as Arcadia) and Sunnyside Manor (now known as North Park). During World War II all of the male residents of Morgan Hill enlisted into military service; however most women did not join because they could not find work after taking time off from their jobs to raise children or serve in the war effort. Many houses still stand today that once housed servicemen during World War II; these include Deerfield Farms (), Huntington Rancho (), Bel Air Estate () & Sunnyside Manor (). After the war ended many residents decided to move back into their homes rather than livein unfamiliar neighborhoods again; this trend continued until after 1990 when redevelopment began around downtown Morgan Hill with mixed use buildings designed for both housing unitsand retail usage
Morgan Hill is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 27,741 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Contra Costa County and the largest city east of San Francisco. The name "Morgan Hill" was given to it by descendant of Englishman Sir John Morgan who settled in the area in 1848. The first post office was established in Morgan Hill on December 12, 1851. The town's first mayor was A. D. White and its first justice of the peace was Jno Kloppenburg. In 1854, Captain George Hearn erected a sawmill on Elk Grove Creek just north of present-day Morgan Hill; this mill continued operation until 1865 when it burned down due to arson by local farmers. In 1867, General order No. 10 issued by Major General Winfield Scott specified that all public buildings must be erected "upon an undefended ground". This order led to construction of several churches and other public structures around what is now downtown Morgan Hill including: Presbyterian Church (1868), Methodist Episcopal Church (1884), First BaptistChurch (1892), Catholic Cathedral (1922) and Mission San Francisco de Asís church (1926). On July 16, 1886,During his 8th term as Mayor Tom Bradley presided over the dedication of Our Lady Ofuggested Assumption Parish Hall which served as City hall from 1886 through 1912 before being moved to its current location south of Interstate 80 in 2002.. In 1903 he also founded Community College District 3 which merged with UC Berkeley later that year creating one large school district headquartered in Berkeley
