Morgan Hill was founded in 1847 by parties of miners and their families. The name derived from the hill on which it was located, Morgan Mountain. The first post office at Morgan Hill was established in 1848. In 1865, the U.S. Post Office moved to Martinez and it remained there until its closure in 1984. The town of Morgan Hill began to thrive as a farming community during the 1850s with large-scale irrigation projects being developed here. By 1860, a school had been built and by 1870, a mill had been erected for grinding limestone into lime for building construction and other purposes. In 1872, an addition to the schoolhouse were built for use as a jail cell for local criminals awaiting trial or sentence. By 1880, most of the production activities in the town had ceased due to difficulties with water availability and competition from larger towns closer to markets in Sacramento County. However, some manufacturing took place such as production of cheese products until 1908 when all mills closed down due to economic reasons including oversupply from nearby cities). In 1907, two brothers named John Dickey started a grocery store on Main Street that continues today as one of the largest grocery stores in Northern California with more than 1 million square feet (9300 m2) of floor space. In 1916/17 they constructed an additional block north on Main Street between First Avenue and Third Avenue known as “The Gables” which housed another grocery store (now part of Macy’s), library/theater complex ( demolished ), fire station No 2 ( now used as apartments ), post office (established 1896),an initial section of railroad tracks running through town before they were abandoned along with much else during World War II In 1924/25 three women - Lilla Bemis Hubbard, Edith Whipple Cook and May Ayres - set up a cooperative grain storage business near downtown called “The Grain Store” which lasted until 1958 when it became part of Safeway Incorporated . A new high school – Morgan Hill High School - was completed in 1951 following plans by banker Clarence Saunders who donated land for it . It replaced an earlier high school that burned down in 1944 .
