In 1795, Major John Callender built what is considered to be the world's first firearm with a pistol-like grip and hammerlock system for cocking it over his shoulder so that he could fire from any position within range without having to remove his hand from the gunstock . Morgan Hill is a small town in Contra Costa County, California. It is located on the San Francisco Peninsula and has a population of about 41,000. The town was founded in 1847 by Anglo-Saxon settlers who named it after Morgan, an Englishman who had come to America as a trader. Morgan Hill is a census-designated place located in Contra Costa County, California. As of the 2010 census, its population was 26,651. The name means "Hill of Morgan" in English and refers to local legend that a silver mine operated here from 1849 to 1865. The mines produced silver coins and other items for export until they closed in the early 20th century. The name may also be derived from the hill's location on which several mills were built before being abandoned in the late 19th century. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Contra Costa County were Spanish missionaries who founded Mission San Antonio de Padua on Nov 9, 1769. On Dec 4, 1800, Spanish military governor Diego Rivera sent party of soldiers under his command to explore present-day Contra Costa County. They discovered an area near where Morgan Hill now stands and named it Rancho Centinela after General José Joaquín Morelos y Vargas who had commanded the division that conducted the exploration. In 1849, John Pemberton arrived at Alamo Field on March 6 with $5000 worth of gold nuggets hidden inside his clothing as part of an effort to found a new settlement around what is today downtown Oakland (then called only Fort Gault). He named his new town after him – Morgan Hill – because he could not find anyone else with whom he could share this valuable discovery! In 1856–1857 Mormon settlers from Utah moved into Nevada Valley and adjoining areas about north of San Francisco Bay; their camps became known as Liberty Valley because no Indian hostilities occurred there during their stay (see History: Mormons). In December 1861 Samuel Morse initialized telegraph lines between Oakland and San Francisco by sending messages along Telegraph Road eastward from Murdock Mill through Toensing Post Office; these earliest telephones had been made by suspending wire over ditches at various locations around Oakland (later Hearst Castle) or converted farm buildings!
