Morgan, who served as a major general in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. Senator from California. In 1865, Captain James Wolk of the 1st Cavalry Regiment established a ranches east of town and named them after General Morgan. The first gunsmith in Morgan Hill was Captain John Soper, who operated from his shop at 9th and Mission Streets until 1881. He then moved to 8th and State Streets where he operated until his death in 1902. In 1868, Ansel Adams visited Morgan Hill and took some pictures of its people and landscape at 2nd Street and Mission Street. These photos are now exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). Between 1870-1872, Major Samuel Hargrave built a house on 3rd Street between cornerMission and Market Streets that is still standing today. During this time period many businesses were established such as hardware stores, feed stores, saloons, etc., which can be found scattered throughout downtownMorgan Hill today." In 1886, Johnnie Hodges opened his grocery store on 4th Street between Castro and Market streets which would become one of the most popular grocery stores in town because it sold groceries to residents as well as visitors alike. Hodges also ran an auto garage on 5thStreet near Castro street which became one of the most important automobile dealerships in town during this time period." In 1911 Drury Latham started selling ice cream from his truck located at 6th Avenue & Third Street which became one of the most popular Ice Cream shops around during this time period." In 1927 Sam Rayburn was elected Speaker of the United States House of Representatives representing Texas's 7th Congressional District (now TX-7). After serving two terms he decided to run for Governor but lost to Frank Murfy by just over 100 votes out of over 400 cast."

It is located on the eastern edge of Silicon Valley and is known for its high-tech industry and software development firms. The first Europeans to visit Morgan Hill were Spanish explorers in 1769, when they named it Paso del Norte after the trail that led from Monterey Peninsula to Santa Cruz Bay. The name likely derived from Morny Hillock (Morny being an old French name for "high mountain") because of its commanding position as a lookout point over the Strait of Magellan. In 1851, Johnskill built a sawmill here and started production of lumber. By 1865 he had developed his own papermaking process which allowed him to produce paper products such as blueprints and stationery without reliance on outside suppliers. In 1868 he founded the Western Paper Company which became one of the largest paper companies in America. In 1876, George Hearst began developing oil reserves in what is now Kern County; during World War II he made several large donations to help finance Project ECHO (Empire Oil Co.) He also built Hearst Castle here in honor of his wife power lobbyist Alice Calafia Hearst who lived nearby at Bel Air Manor until her death in 1946). During World War II many American businesses were moved to Europe or Japan due to shortages of materials caused by the war effort including Ford Motor Company's Willow Run plant and General Electric's Westinghouse division's Manhattan plant where natural gas was produced by burning coal seams beneath hills near Princeton, New Jersey
