The first Europeans to visit Morgan Hill were two Jesuit fathers, José de Molina and Antonio de Andrade, on November 1 and 2, 1527. A Mission San Francisco de Asís was established on what is now Piedras Negras Road in 1847 by Father Junípero Serra as part of his plan to create a secular mission system in California. The Franciscan friars built the church and school on land they had acquired nearby at the southern end of—then undeveloped—the present-day city of Richmond. A post office called Morgan Hill was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first store opened near today's intersection of Piedras Negras Road and Utopia Boulevard (now College Avenue). The store's owner/manager was Jens Müller who also founded the first paper mill hereabouts around 1875; Muller's Mills still produces newsprint products today. In 1886 developer Wm Hildebrandt erected atop a hill he had been purchasing for many years an imposing Gothic Revival–style mansion known locally as "Mansion Heights". Mrs. Hildebrandt became one of the early women civic leaders hereabouts with her establishment of local benevolent societies before she passed away in 1915; her son later served as mayor from 1951 to 1959 inclusive). Local legend has it that when money could no longer be raised locally to support Mansion Heights' lavish lifestyle–such as its own private carriage ride to social events and wine tastings ($1 per person per outing)—Mrs Hildebrandt sold all but one room (the ballroom) for $5,000 cash at an auction conducted by none other than Stanford University president David Starr Jordan himself! Mrs Hildebrandt repurchased much remainder of home following sale some years later for just $2 million less than their original asking price! Morgan Hill is a small city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, about 25 miles (40 km) north of Fresno and 50 miles (80 km) south of Stockton. The population was 48,865 at the 2010 census. Hartnell Dry Goods Store opened there around 1889 further developing that area surroundingDyereville Farm . By 1910 there were only ten families living here with businesses clustered around 4th street/Vine St., Joeseph Ladd Hardware store, Mrs Beasley’s bakery/canned goods store open 3 weeksdays per week during 1911-1912 season (& closed Monday nights), Redwood Pool Hotel aka Redwood Inn ran by Edith Ann Baldwin 1914-1920 (& reopened February 1st 1921), Harry Collis movie theater 1912-1920 (& closed March 15th 1920), Masonic Lodge No 636 refurbished 1916 [now occupied by Weiser County Museum], Old Spanish Missions Schoolhouse 1903 [closed] , Gertrude Herron Ladies Shoes opened 1926 [now occupied by Mexicali Historical Society] In 1930 sixteen families lived here7 people working full time plus homemaker Mabel Mendez doing all domestic chores plus school supplies for students attending school nearby as part of collective bargaining agreement reached between locals and contract workers employed by Southern Pacific Railroad company operating track parallel unto town limits . The city's first school was built in 1902; it became an elementary school after Morgan Hill Elementary School closed in 1957. In 1916, Irvine donated land to create what would become University Avenue (later renamed Mission Boulevard). The university's first building was erected on the donation: Claremont College Department of Mathematics and Statistics Building (now known as UC Berkeley Haas School of Business). In 1951, Claremont College relocated to its current location on University Avenue; since then, Morgan Hill has been home to one of Northern California's most highly respected universities. As Silicon Valley grew into its own distinct region during the late 20th century and early 21st century, various businesses began moving out of Morgan Hill - including Hewlett-Packard (HP), Sun Microsystems (SUN), Oracle Corporation (ORCL), Apple Computer Inc., and others - but many continue to operate there today as part of Silicon Valley’s commercial district or downtown area
