The first Europeans to visit Morgan Hill were José Yuen and his party on October 13, 1777, when they went inland from Monterey Peninsula looking for a place to winter. They became lost in the woodlands and returned early the next morning after finding an Indian village. On their return journey Yuen's ship was wrecked off Cape Mendocino so he and his men spent the winter taking water from nearby Humboldt Lakes. On February 10, 1800, Spanish Captain Antonio Sanchez set out from Valparaiso with eleven vessels and two hundred crewmen under Lieutenant José de Menéndez yChela to explore what lay between Point Reyes National Seashore and Soquel Creek junction about twenty miles east of San Francisco Bay. He reached Morgan Hill on February 15 having missed by only a day our sailing due northward along Cape Mendocino beach after reaching it just before dark on January 27th latitude 37°N longitude 122°W.. There are several stories concerning this expedition; one says that Sanchez met some Indians while exploring that night near Point Reyes Station; another has him anchored off shore when he sighted land ahead beyond those pointy rocks which gave rise to the erroneous belief that he had discovered Santa Cruz Island - but there was no Santa Cruz Island then or any such island now within geographical range of Valparaiso... In any case we found heretics living among us who professed to be Christians (Mendocino Missionary Society Archives). This event started what would become known as Missions in Morgan Hill- namely Stonington Presbyterian Church (1863) followed by First Baptist Church (1868), both operated by Scottish missionaries until 1892 when they merged into Reformed Episcopal church which still operates today as Unitarian Universalist Congregational Church #1A in downtown Morgan Hill. The population of Morgan Hill increased rapidly during its early history due largely to German immigrants who began arriving during 1848 shortly after American independence from Great Britain through Gold Rush era frenzy across Northern California proclaiming themselves "Germans without papers". The influx of Germans increased competition for jobs and housing so many people founded societies such as cooperatives in order to secure these resources both self-promotion and economic security against possible discrimination or violence should they assert themselves too forcefully within society or clash with established Anglo-Saxon groups particularly Methodists and Presbyterians who saw them primarily as tools for social engineering In 1851 Luther Burbank organized a group of farmers led by John Sutter whom Burbank called "the Pioneers" because they traveled throughout most of California establishing vineyards/markets/schools etc., thereby breaking down barriers between cultures while also providing work opportunities for nativesAmericanized Germans

Morgan Hill is a small town in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, located about 24 miles (38 km) east of downtown San Francisco. It was founded by American fur trader and explorer James K. Polk in 1836 as a station on the stagecoach Trail of Tears from Santa Fe to Sacramento. The name comes from a hill that overlooks the town. The first permanent settler in Morgan Hill was John Gifford, who arrived in 1839. He built an adobe house on what is now Main Street and another at Third Street, both now within the limits of the city of San Francisco. Gifford's house still stands and can be visited. In 1840, George Barker established himself at nearby Adobe Valley with his wife Rebecca and their six children: three girls (Fanny, Mary Ann, Helen), one boy (George), and two boys (John Barker). Barker also raised horses and mules for carrying goods overland to Market Place near where Caltrain approaches today. In 1841 he moved his family south to new land which he had purchased northeast of present-day Morgan Hill on Round Valley Creek near what is now West Oakland Cemetery. There he erected a cabin among some old oak trees which still stands today as part of Round Valley Historic District/Cemetery #2 . Over time many other families followed suit until around 1860 there were only a few hundred residents living in Morgan Hill proper while most people lived around nearby towns such as Hillsborough or South Park . One reason for this dwindling population may have been lack of available water power due to hillslope erosion making it difficult to generate electricity from traditional methods such as steamboat locomotion or water wheels; however this did not stop some early settlers from beginning construction on what would become known as "the Electric House". This house became known locally as "The Gridiron" because its construction used specially designed iron braces that held together several large slates that functioned like roof tiles - much like an English gridiron system Today's electric streetlights use similar braces! The first electric light bulb was installed here in 1903 by Harvey Firestone! However despite all these efforts things were not going well for Morgan Hill – population grew slowly but steadily during prohibition era when gambling increased along with black marketeering operations However even during prohibition period there were no major fires which might have led to loss of business opportunities for businesses owners . After repeal effective January 1st 1933 local Greenwood Business Improvement District was set up by mayor Robert Haggerty with the goal to revitalize downtown areas including Morgan Hill Some progress has been made since then but overall crime rates have continued to increase especially compared to neighboring cities A number of redevelopment projects are currently being planned or under way including an arts district centered around downtown called ArtsMall#1 with plans for shops, restaurants, art galleries etc.; additional development adjacent Lake Merritt will provide more than 400 residential units Lots recently subdivided into blocks could see sizable growth again if approved
