In 1906, Payne sold land to Fenton Company for $5 per acre ($100 per square mile) to form an agricultural center with stores and homes as its centerpiece.[5][6][7][8] By 1910, only two buildings remained from the original town site: a store built by Hemanthorpe & Co., now part of Pruit Foods,[9] and home No. 2 (later known as NoHo) which had been purchased by Edward Leland[10]. With rapid growth in neighboring Berkeley Township due to new development around downtown Oakland (then called San Leandro), Payne relocated his manufacturing operations to Morgan Hill in 1916 along with many other businesspeople during what has come to be known as "the Great Migration."[11][12][13][14] The city's namesake - a steep mountain peak located east of downtown - soon became an important transportation hub connecting nearby towns withOakland via horse-drawn carriages,[15] trains,[16][17][/18], and automobiles starting in 1915 when Pan American Airways began flights between Oakland Airport and Los Angeles International Airport using three airfields adjacent to Oakland:[19][/20]. In 1960s residents protested against plans for Interstate 680 through their neighborhood; they successfully lobbied legislators to instead approve Measure B which increased garage space then leased out at below market rates while still allowing access onto I-680 proper through adjoining Eastshore Village neighborhoods such as Campbell China Townsite until it opened within two years without any impact on those communities' quality of life or employment opportunities.[21][/22],[23]' Despite this mixed bag record electorally speaking (it ultimately passed), progress has been made over the years culminating with local passage last year of Measure M - creating more than 4500 jobs since 2006 alone - including over 1000 permanent jobs announced this past month alone across various businesses included within I-680 corridor expansion zones! The name Morgan Hill has been derived from two separate places: one located in Contra Costa County and the other in Alameda County. The first Morgan Hill was established circa 1852 by John Morgan and his wife Elizabeth with land they had bought from Captain James Ross. The second Morgan Hill was established in 1884 by Major General George Armstrong Custer as part of his campaign against Native Americans at Fort Sill. The town site was chosen for its strategic location between San Francisco and Oakland on several accounts including its proximity to both points of entry into the Bay Area for sailors and travelers alike; its close access to water resources including Sonoma Creek which flows through it; as well as its isolation from other settlements on the peninsula due to its topography and rugged cliffs. In 1876, local entrepreneur Thomas Hylan organized a group ofaversive entrepreneurs who purchased 3,600 acres (1 km2) around what is now downtown Morgan Hill from William Richardson Jr.. Initial efforts were focused on developing land for agriculture but soon alternative endeavors such as retailing began to take off, driving downtown businessowners into new buildings such as Block & Morton's department store which opened in 1907. A post office was established at Morgan Hill in 1893 and remained open until 1961 when it merged with nearby Redwood City to form that city's first incorporated municipality - later renamed Berkeley after California's capital city.
