Morgan Hill, California is a small town located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 3,876 at the 2000 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and has a rich history dating back to the 1800s. The first inhabitants of Morgan Hill were Native Americans who lived there for many years before white settlers arrived in 1849. The name Morgan Hill may be derived from an earlier Indian name, Munroe-hta-wuahtse, meaning “place where the deer roam” or “valley over which the stream rates”. In 1853, Colonel George Wetherill founded what would become known as Wetherill Ranch on land that he had purchased from the Chumash people. About this time, two other families also moved to Morgan Hill: The Marchand family bought property in 1857 and built a home called Mount Hermon on it; and John Cranch bought property east of present day Main Street in 1865. In 1870, local entrepreneur James Irvine opened his first store in downtown Morgan Hill and began developing what would become known as Irvine Valley. By 1880, Irvine had founded nine companies that supplied goods to local farmers and ranchers including Andrew Irvine Glass Company (now Jardine Matheson) and Irvine Pump & Storage Company (later owned by NRG Energy). In 1886, incorporation of Contra Costa County was created with its own government; Morgan Hill became one of its original townships. In 1912 saw the opening of Alameda Junior College with classes starting out at noon until 5 p.m., making it one of the longest running high schools in Northern California – still going strong today! In 1923 when Cal Poly Pomona opened its doors nearby (it replaced Alameda Junior College), Morgan Hill saw another influx of students with new parents looking for an education for their children close by while they continued working at their farms or businesses during World War II; Alameda Junior College closed shortly thereafter due to lack of demand from students seeking similar programs nearerby though Claremont Colleges would open later that same year on campus just south of town center.) In 1951 came Orson Welles’s famous radio show Apple Jacks airwaves across town on KPFA station beginning life as KRON AM 1400 kHz next door! In 1946, local residents ratified Measure B which designated Morgan Hill as their new city limits; this Act helped create what is now known as East Palo Alto within current boundaries of San Mateo County . In 1957, when Interstate 80 was created and passed through central California it bypassed Morgan Hill going north instead crossing Redwood Valley to enter Daly City just south of Mountain View while passing through Tracy beyond . This changed everything with businesses moving out eastward along I-80 until only a few remaining businesses remain within present day MorganHill boundaries In the early 1990s when Silicon Valley became more developed than ever before there began to be requests for larger towns near Silicon Valley so development could move closer while still maintaining some degree of privacy backyard subdivisions sprung up all around these large towns trying to maintain some sense of community despite being right next door
Morgan Hill was founded in 1868 by John Morgan and his wife, Harriet. The town was named after the hill on which it was located. In 1892, the first post office was established in Morgan Hill. The name of the town changed to Morgan City in 1909. In 1916, the city annexed part of Huntington Beach.
