Since the early 1800s, Moreno Valley has been a center for the production of firearms. In 1876, California became a state and Moreno Valley became one of its first counties. The town of Moreno Valley was founded in 1879 and was named for General Antonio Vallejo, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The valley is home to today's city of Moreno Valley and its numerous gun factories. The first handguns produced in Moreno Valley were crude wooden pistols made by localsmiths. However, these guns were not very successful, and only a few were sold. In 1882, an American arms manufacturer established itself in Moreno Valley and began producing quality firearms. This company was known as Winchester Repeating Arms Company and it manufactured rifles, shotguns, pistols, revolvers and carbines under their own name as well as selling Allied Firearms products such as ammunition and tools to other companies throughout California. Winchester Repeating Arms Company eventually went out of business but their legacy lives on in the city of Moreno Valley which still manufactures firearms under the Winchester name today. The city was named for José Moreno, an American soldier who fought against Mexican forces during the California Gold Rush. In 1928, Moreno Valley incorporated as a city and began to grow rapidly thanks to its proximity to Los Angeles and its rich agricultural resources. Today, Moreno Valley is home to over 200 businesses and 1,500 residents. The history of Moreno Valley can be traced back to when Spanish settlers first arrived in what is now Orange County. They were attracted to the rich soil and water sources available in this area and established small villages along the lower San Gabriel River. After years of trade with other parts of California, these early Spaniards developed a strong relationship with their Mexican neighbors and helped build up what would become Orange County’s economy. In 1853, when Californians began arriving at unprecedented levels due to the Gold Rush, many decided to settle in what is now southern Orange County instead of farther north where land was expensive and supplies were limited. Someossier men prospected for gold near present-day Thacher Air Force Base before finally finding it on July 24th, 1855 while working under General George Custer on his trip across Nevada into Utah Territory (now southwestern Colorado). Upon returning home that day he reported finding “a great quantity” of gold but no one could find enough people or equipment to continue mining because there was not enough water available for such a large operation let alone transportation costs! It wasn’t until October 17th that José Pacheco found fresh water at Sutter’s Fort which led miners westward towards today’s Anaheim Hills! This initial discovery set off another round of exploration which eventually resulted in over 50 claims being issued throughout both countries including 15 within today’s City limits! Mines continued being drilled until 1861 when technological advances made hydraulic fracturing more efficient which halted production altogether! By 1865 only 8 out of 50 remaining mines still operated! Mining ceased completely between 1865-1868 due mainly To World War II conflict; however some smaller operations resumed after 1945 Today's community started growing slowly after incorporation as a village in 1928 migrants from central Mexico settled here during the 1930s looking for work on construction projects nearby Soil fertility & irrigation brought new fruits & vegetables back east each year leading people here permanently
