The area that would become Moreno Valley was given its name from Captain Isaac Moreno. For many years, the only thing known about the area was that it had valuable gold deposits. However, in 1875, a group of entrepreneurs led by James Irvine started exploring what is now known as the Inland Empire and discovered large amounts of silver and other minerals in what is now Moreno Valley. This new discovery led to a resurgence in business for Irvine’s group and helped make the town an important player in California’s silver rush of the 1870s. By 1886, much of what is now Moreno Valley had been developed as a result of this new industry. Moreno Valley has played an important role in American history ever since its founding. It is home to University City – one of America’s largest universities – as well as several dozen businesses including banks and factories that have made it one of the most vibrant communities in Northern California. Today, there are still many reminders of how powerful and influential Moreno Valley has been over the years: From University City’s iconic Clock Tower to nearby mines that continue to produce silver ore today, residents can see just how much their community has contributed to American life.
