Today’s workforce is also composed largely of recent immigrants - 9 out 10 workers are foreign-born residents – making up an important part of the community’s diversity and economic vitality. The economy base for Moreno Valley is heavy industry with some light industrial employment as well as services such as restaurants and healthcare businesses. In 1907, a group of businessmen from nearby La Cañada Flintridge founded the Chamber of Commerce here with the goal of promoting economic development within this struggling rural community. The chamber helped promote tourism throughout much of southern California during this time period and has been involved in various civic activities ever since. After years of decline, agriculture began to rebound around 2000 thanks to plant breeders’ efforts towards bringing forward more productive varieties for crops such as cotton and cereals; however, joblessness remains a problem today plaguing many residents in this primarily agricultural community.
