In 1870, an opera house and theater were built in what is now downtown Moreno Valley; they continue to operate today as the Paramount Theatre complex. In 1906, George Hearst donated 6 acres (2 hectares) of land along Foothill Boulevard east of Interstate 10 for use as open space; he named it Miramar Beach after himself and his wife Marcela de la Vega Miranda-Hearst (1863-1937). Today's nearby Miramar Elementary School serves students from grades pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson visited Los Angeles and made an address at Claremont McKenna College before traveling back down the coast to Watsonville where he delivered another speech at Santa Anita Racetrack before staying overnight at La Quinta Hotel on May 5th/6th prior to traveling southbound on I-5 en route back home via Monterey Bay Bridge onto Highway 1A which leads directly into City Hall Plaza acrossfrom City Hall) During World War II local businesses produced munitions used by both sides including: Ford Motor Company’s Willowbrook Arsenal plant southeast of town which produced more than one million rounds per day during WWII “ …and two companies that made shoes –Lansing Boot & Shoe Co., Incorporated (now closed), and Bechtel National Atomic Power Plant(now stopped production but still extant), both west side streets off US 95 near CA Aqueduct bridge”
