The history of Moraga begins with two families who immigrated from Spain in 1869. Manuel Nieto and his wife Josefa moved to Moraga from the city of San Francisco on December 12th of that year. José Frías settled in 1865 and his wife María came later that year. José’s brother Manuel also arrived about this time, but he did not live long enough to see his family settle down here. The first post office opened in Moraga on November 10th, 1871; it was called “Hacienda de la Cueva” (“House of the Cave”). It was renamed “Moraga” on May 1st, 1898 after then-Governor Pico de Ayala offered land for a school at what is now the corner of 20th Street and Alma Road west of downtown San Leandro (now part of Oakland). In 1915, when mail service ended between Sacramento and Los Angeles because of World War I,Moragahand letter carriers used horse carts to carry messages between rural areas served by local stations like Tomales Bay Station or Martinez Lake Station until an electric line was built which made these stops obsolete in 1922. Moraga is located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 21,853 at the 2010 census. Moraga has been inhabited by the Ohlone people since before European settlement began. Mission San Francisco de Asís founded in 1776 and soon after became the site of a full-time mission with an adobe chapel and monastery. The area now occupied by Moraga was first part of Rancho El Sobrante, granted to José del Valle in 1824. In 1847, parts of Rancho El Sobrante were sold to Antonio Terra and Rafael Bordallo for $5,000USD. This left Moraga open to purchase by other individuals or groups until it was finally acquired by the City of Berkeley on January 1st, 1906 for $26,500USD through an act of its Mayor Hahneman. The history of Moraga begins with two small settlements that developed around Mission San Francisco de Asís and Mission Santa Clara de Alcalá on both sides of what is now State Route 1 (SR 1). One group built homes around 1800 while another constructed a millinery shop in 1802 following instructions from alcalde Don Manuel García from Mexico City as part of his effort to increase trade within Contra Costa County during this time period. By 1800 there were over fifty residents living in these early villages when Spanish missionaries arrived followed shortly thereafter by Chinese immigrants who also started settling here in large numbers beginning in 1825. In 1850 CHP Agent José Ortiz reported that there were “several hundred natives” living near town limits but he could not determine their social status or whether they were warriors or peasants because they had no weapons or arms except bows and arrows which they used primarily for hunting game rather than fighting against Europeans who then held much power throughout California south of Sacramento River. A few years later Mexican American War veteran John Catt kicker noted that there were about one hundred Native Americans living near town limits but he could not tell if they were warriors or farmers because most wore animal skins instead of clothing so he could only guess at their social status which would likely have been lower than those above due to lack thereof information at the time such as armorry being limited to Spaniards at the time while many others had access to firearms some even owning more than one household item per person including bridles and saddles! Accordingly upon Mexican American War victory General Antonio Lopez ordered all remaining Indian prisoners brought into custody rather than release them into further conflict along side Cheyenne & Arapaho bands allied with United States forces under General Philip Sheridan thereby ending any possibility for continued hostilities between US troops & indigenous peoples across California! This effectively ended any longstanding hostilities between Californios & Natives resulting from earlier encounters leading up to Mexican American War! It should be noted that this event cannot be directly linked back to Captain Jose Ortiz as none evidence exists showing him ordering any particular group/savage taken into custody following victory over Pancho Villa however his actions may have been influenced by events leading up thereto including his own personal experiences commanding Ulysses S Grant’s army during the campaign!
