In the late 1800s, Moraga was a small agricultural town in the southcentral section of California. The town was located on the banks of the Sacramento River and had a population of about 2,000 people. At that time, there were few means to protect oneself from crime in Moraga. The Moraga Valley is located in the Tehachapi Mountain Range, approximately 100 miles northwest of Los Angeles and 110 miles east of San Francisco. The valley was named for José Moraga, a citizen of Spanish descent who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1848, after the United States acquired California from Mexico, General Antonio López de Santa Anna created Rancho Cucamonga within the Moraga Valley. The first settlers were horse thieves and outlaws who raided other ranchers in search of horses to sell to American soldiers. By 1850, agriculture had become an important part of the community and by 1870, there were over 100 families residing in the valley. By 1907, Moraga had a population of 2,500 people and it was designated as a town by state mandate on October 13th that year.

The history of Moraga begins with Captain John Sutter who granted land to Francisco Palou from Mission San José de la Jolieta on May 26, 1847. In 1851, Captain Sutter sold his rancho to James Folsom who chose to Named it Rancho Folsom after himself and donated land for a cattle drive which started from Sacramento on July 3rd, 1851. On November 10th, 1860 James Folsom's son George Witherspoon purchased the remaining Rancho Moraga Grant from Captian John Sutter for $2700 cash plus interest at 7%. The Witherspoon heirs continued to own and manage the property until their death in 1967 when it was transferred to the City ofmoraga through marriage between Margaret Hargrave (daughter of Dr.GeorgeWitherspoon) and Clifford Margetts (son-in-law of Mayor Eldon Berger). At about this time there were only a few scattered settlements in what is now Contra Costa County including El Sobrante just north of Walnut Creek and Orinda east of Menlo Park along Highway 466 near Bayshore Reservoirs which were used by Native Americans for hunting waterfowl during winter months when they could not travel far into interior California becauseOf lackof snow cover or ice covering their transportation routes In 1861 Captain John Sutter reacquired most if not all his original grants including Moraga from James Folsom - giving him an almost complete new grant area that spanned many miles inland than any other ranchos/cities at that time Captain John Sutter also developed what would become known as "The Town", located east side of present day downtown where he built homes for himself and soon after began selling goods & services across what are now termed "the four corners" ie., Pleasant Hill, North Beach/ Blanco Heights, Fisherman's Wharf If you ask most locals today where "The Town" actually sits they will likely tell you it was located around Market Street NE corner with present day Interstate 5 then turn west onto Quincy Avenue before reaching Market Street again - this course being followed even today by some drivers travelling from west Stockton towards downtown Modesto . Even though many people believe that The Town actually extended slightly further south along Present Day I-5 then outlined above however no documentary evidence exists verifying this claim either way sporadic references back to the early 1850s suggest that at least some portion of downtown Modesto may have been situated within / adjacent to The Town limits at one point or another
When California became a state in 1848, the land that is now Moraga was part of Rancho San Joaquin. The settlement started as a small town on the banks of the Sacramento River and grew over time to include what is today Moraga, all of eastern Contra Costa County, and parts of Placer and Alameda counties. The first post office was established in 1851. In 1861, a railroad was built through Moraga and it soon became a center for agricultural production. The town also began to serve as an education center with its own public school system. In 1926, the town incorporated as a city. Today, Moraga is home to around 100 residents and has several businesses including two hospitals and three Colleges/Universities: Solano Community College; Monterey Peninsula University - Northridge; and Chico State University - East Bay Campus
