Moraga, California is a small town in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Pacific Coast of North America and shares borders with Sausalito to the east and Tiburon to the west. The name Moraga comes from Spanish meaning "moor" or "plain". The first Europeans to visit what is now Moraga were Catholic missionaries in 1821. They named it San Francisco de Asís after Jesuit Father Asís who had been sent by Spain to found a mission there. In 1836, Mexican forces under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna burned down the Mission San Francisco de Asís which left the area undeveloped for over 50 years. In 1869, American Commodore John Doolittle led an expedition up the coast of Northern California in search of new routes to Asia bypassing China. He sailed through part of today's Marin County on his way south and spotted a large body of salt water off Point Reyes National Seashore. He called it "the Golden Gate". Doolittle reported this find back to his superiors and they decided to name it Estero del Norte (Northeast Harbor). In 1872, Atherton Ranch was founded by Captn Daniel Fenton and Mrs Emma Fenton as part of land grants given them by Governor Goodwin Key during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. The ranch included 5 square miles (12 km2) of mudflat at Point Reyes Station on Point Reyes Island between Marinaside Road (now US-1) and Hwy 1 south of Sausalito before being transferred eastward along Marinaside Road past Tiburon into present day Moraga Valley when that road was improved in 1940-41 as State Route 3A. After Captain Fenton's death in 1886 his widow Mrs Emma continued running Atherton Ranch until her death in 1916; during her lifetime she treated many celebrities including William Saroyan who spent time at Atherton Ranch while writing One Hundred Years Of Solitude . Today Atherton Ranch is managed by Friends Of Point Reyes National Seashore which includes visitor center on property adjacent to beach where author Alice Sebold visited in 1976 Estero del Norte became known as Moraga after its namesake locally: Don Jose Herrera Morales Aguayo owned 500 acres (200 ha) bordering Sausalito Bay about northwest of Tiburon village near mouth of Eastshore Creek about north-northwest corner then easterly into present day Moraga Valley; he gave names only halfheartedly because he could not get people from all corners around here interested enough - so some things just got confused like Big Sur & Seaside Heights !! Robert Hirschhorn took over ownership 1978 when Don Jose's daughter Luz Flores Aguayo died suddenly without heirs apparent so there has been little real change other than occasional light maintenance except for keeping trackof public access rights since then .... There are no roads leading anywhere near any seashores but you can walk or bike or take a bus or boat trip right up close if you want ...... Morga

The Moraga Valley is a region in the Central California Coast Ranges, located about 120 miles east of San Francisco Bay and about 210 miles northwest of Los Angeles. The valley was named for José Antonio Moraga, an early Mexican landowner. The first European to arrive in the region was Captain John Muir, who explored the area in 1846. In 1853, gold was found near Mount Shasta and rapid population growth led to the erection of many small villages and towns in what is now Moraga Valley. By 1870, most of the people living in Moraga were Anglo American settlers from New England and Northern Ireland. The town of Redding became one of the largest cities in California when it was founded by ranchers on November 12, 1872. By 1900, total population had increased to over 100,000 residents. Although there has been some recent immigration (mostly from Latin America) throughout much ofmoraga valley history, most people here are descended from Anglo American settlers who arrived during or after Gold Rush days. Many key cultural aspects associated with this period have continued unchanged: all-male high school choirs still sing "Auld Lang Syne," cowboys still ride around on horseback drinking bullpen schnapps called buckaroo down at old watering holes called bunkers (the name comes from a Native word meaning "a hole in the ground"),and traditional foods like pie crusts made with butter and eggs remain popular today among locals as well as visitors."
