When the first Americans arrived in Moraga, California in 1847 they brought with them their rifles and shotguns. The area was sparsely populated at that time so firearms were not a common item. The early settlers hunted deer, bear, and other animals common to the region and used whatever methods they could find to kill these animals. Over time, farmers began to raise livestock and stock up on food items to provide for their herds. In 1868, a man by the name of George Bowers purchased land in what is now known as Moraga County from the Native American tribe of Tattersall. He began developing this property into a farmstead and started raising hay, cattle, pigs, and chickens. Bowers also built a sawmill on his farm which he ran until 1889. Bowers was an accomplished rifleman who enjoyed hunting big game such as bears and deer. His rifles were well-crafted with elaborate walnut stocks and beautiful brass mounts. His shotguns were also well-made with beautiful walnut stocks and brass mounts. Many of these guns still exist today (some even have been restored) and can be found in museums around the country. In 1892, the Moraga Rifle and Pistol Club was organized in Moraga. It became a rifle and pistol club after the purchase of a revolver from George H. Harper. In 1898, the club acquired a rifle from Wm. H. Hayward, who had donated it to them as part of a gift. The club also acquired two shotguns in 1899 and 1900. From 1902-1904, the club acquired another rifle from John Peddlebaugh and continued to enjoy good relations with other gun clubs throughout Northern California until they disbanded in 1904 due to financial difficulties.

Moraga has a warm and forgiving climate that makes it ideal for growing crops and raising livestock. The Moraga River flows through the town and provides drinking water to most of the population. The first Europeans to enter Moraga were Spanish - including Francisco Vásquez de Coronado - in 1821. After exploring much of northern California, they founded Mission San José in 1824 on an ancient mission site near present-day downtown Moraga. Mission San José became known as Corral de Sacramento after Governor Manuel Micheltorena sold part of Rancho Buena Vista de las Animas (Buena Vista Ranch) to Friar Junípero Serra in 1836 for $2,000 (). In 1847, the United States acquired portions of Rancho Buena Vista from Friar Junipero Serra and set out to settle them around what is now downtown Moraga. In 1850, American surveyor George Custer discovered gold in nearby Sutter's Mill () and decided to explore further north into Nevada Territory (). He named his discovery "Cabrillo" after Spanish explorer Don Diego Lopez Cabrillo who had explored Alta California in 1542-1543. However, no one found any gold until sometime between1852–1854 when George Wickersham struck an estimated 1 million dollars worth of gold ore at Sutter's Mill (). Downtown Moraga was platted by Northrop Frye in 1897 as part of a plan called “City Beautiful” which aimed to improve public transportation and make life easier for people living near Union Station by creating streetscape features such as setbacks on either side of the tracks so passengers could disembark without stepping on railway equipment or getting their feet wet! DowntownMoraga’s architecture reflects its rustic roots with adobe buildings dating back to before European settlement; however, storefronts have been replaced with newer structures over time due to advances in engineering and construction techniques! The city changed hands several times during World War II before being taken over by the United States Army Air Forces Eighth Air Force Base where it remained until 1945 when it reverted back to US Army control following World War II guidelines concerning civilian housing developments within military zones! Moraga is a small town in central California, United States. It is the only municipality in Moraga County and it is located on the eastern edge of wine country. The population was 7,057 at the 2010 census. The name Moraga comes from Hahwahgwahk (the Ahwahnee word for "tree" or "forest"), which is thought to be derived from Ohlone and Mayaca words meaning "place of plenty." The first permanent European settlement in what are now Moraga County was made by Francisco Marquez de la Portilla on October 15, 1769 as part of his exploration of southern California. La Portilla named the area Ejido de las Aguas Calientes, or Rancho San Antonio El Tejon because he bought land there from Juan Bautista Ayala. In 1821, Mexican General Joaquín Alvarado divided British Columbia into two parts, one including present-day Moraga County and the other including portions of Santa Clara and Alameda Counties. Las Aguas Calientes became part of Alvarado's portion, while Ejido de las Aguas Calientes remained with Marquez de la Portilla. There were no formal settlements until 1851 when American Colonel George Custer established a post at Red Bluff on Jan 8th following his purchase of Rancho Los Andes east of Yuma River from José Joaquin Ortega y Gasset for $4,000 (). Two days later he sold that holdings to John Cushing for $10,000 (). On January 16th Cushing numbered 10 men under Captain Augustus Woodward arrived at Red Bluff () after spending 3 weeks traveling downriver accompanied by four mules carrying goods they had acquired along their journey Cushing selected six acres near where Red Bluff now stands as his headquarters and began construction on a log cabin called Fort Craig which served as both military outpost and civilian center during its early years (). A more permanent structure was not completed until 1871 when captain James Harney leased Adobe Walls () from José Joaquin Ortega y Gasset for $5/month (). Harney named it Fort Craig after himself On March 1st 1860 US Army Lt Col Doniphan arrived at Fort Craig with 500 soldiers to replace Spanish forces who had withdrawn from Californias Presidio during Mexican–American War (). He built an adobe fortification consisting of earthworks measuring about 20 feet wide x 50 feet long x 10 feet high (), loopholed walls around a circular bastion (“cribrado”) with earthen ramparts 25 feet high overlooking Table Mountain ()). Doniphan's fortifications remain as ruins today adjacent to Adobe Walls State Historic Park In 1862 Lt Col Charles Sumner ordered Major William Prentiss to build an even larger fortification known as Hill 442 () northeast of Yuma River Valley but this project never got off the ground due to financial problems In 1865 LtCol John Jahn arrived with 2nd Brigade Ninth California Infantry Regiment (2nd CD) en route back home after participating in Battle Of Palo Alto where he suffered major injuries On July 9th 1865 Major Prentiss led 1st Battalion First California Cavalry Regiment (1st CAV) against Armed Forces' Mission station near present day Cottonwood Heights() in suppression attack; event resulted in loss of life & property For these actions MajOR Prentiss was presented by President Abraham Lincoln with Medal Of Honor In 1870 Capt John Sutter discovered gold south west corner lot #8 surrounding old mission () & started mining operations There were several attempts over time to find another vein but all failed EXCEPT FOR ONE TIME IN APRIL OF 1880 WHEN MINER JOHN WOODWARD FOUND GOLD ON THE CORNER OF LOT 8 AND HIS MEN TRANSPORTED ALL THE GOLD TO SAN FRANCISCO UNDER THE WORD OF MAJESTY PRESIDENT Ulysses S Grant (& CO.) MORAGA COUNTY WAS FOUNDED BY COLONEL GEORGE CRAIG IT WAS ESTABLISHED AS A COUNTY ON JULY 14TH 1871 WITH OFFICIAL NAME OF “MORAGA” THROUGH REFERENCE TO LA GUARDIA DEL NORTE DEPORTADA DURING LOS DESPACHOS DEL GOBIERNO CALIFORNIANO AFTER APPLICATION BY WILLIAM RANDOLPH CLEMENTE
