In 1859, Captain Nathaniel Bent found gold near today's downtown area; this discovery led to many new settlers arriving in what is now Moraga during that year alone. However it wasn't until 1865 that any permanent structures were erected in the town center—the first being Captain Samuel Morse's adobe jail which still stands today (across from downtown). Soon after that building became home to numerous businesses including mercantile stores and blacksmiths before becoming dilapidated and bequeathed to local school district in 1931–1932 byCaptain Samuel Morse's widow Lucy Morse Bent; she died without children having an opportunity to inherit it."
