The first mayor of Moraga was Manuel Nieto y Piñeira while City Council meetings were held at aadobe building until 1857 when they moved to the current courthouse which still stands today. In 1906, Workman’s Mill burned down leaving behind a black smudge on the horizon that would become known as “the wake” or “the thumbprint of workman’s mill” because it could be seen from miles away. Other early optics manufacturers include Stevens & Sons (1895), Moore (1901), Singer (1902), Sturbridge(1903), Rheinwalds(1905) and Schneider (1911). However, it was automobile manufacturer Dodge that actually developed the first practical 3x4 inch wide angle lens in 1916. This new design allowed for increased Resolution at extremely tight angles making it perfect for commercial photography and other special applications such as product Photography. During World War II, many optical companies stepped up their production in order support the war effort. The area that would become Moraga was originally inhabited by the Tongva people, who lived on the east side of Los Angeles River betweenwhat is now downtown Los Angeles and what is now Pacific Palisades. The Tongva were replaced by Mexican settlers in 1821, and they began to move into this area around 1836. In 1848, prospectors discovered gold near what is now Moraga; however, it wasn’t until 1863 when George Copley started to develop this area into a town. By 1865, there were 10 buildings in town; however, only two remained standing by 1930. In 1925, construction began on the current community hall which was completed in 1933. Today, Moraga continues to be home to many businesses including restaurants, jewelry stores and local breweries. Some notable landmarks in town include State College Chapel which was built in 1928 and houses the Moraga Museum which opened its doors in 2002.
Moraga is a census-designated place in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 8,851 at the 2010 census. Moraga is located on the north shore of the San Pablo Bay and is adjacent to unincorporated communities of Danville and Petaluma.
