In 1870, Philip Randolph moved his family from Walnut Creek (now Orinda) to Moraga after purchasing 640 acres (25 ha) of Rancho Rincon de las Pulgas from Fernando Woodruff. In 1902 he founded Randolph & Randolph Law Firm which became one of Northern California's leading law firms. He also served as Mayor of Moraga from 1925-1928 and 1931-1935; State Senator from 1942-1950; member of U.S. Congress 1943-1945; dean of University of Southern California School of Law 1951-1957; president pro tempore United States Senate 1954-1958; secretary general American Bar Association 1958-1960; governor 1959-1965; mayor 1966-. Richard Nixon visited Moraga twice while campaigning for President in 1968: on October 20th at Jack London Square near downtown Moraga and again two days later at Regency Ballroom on Pacific Avenue just south of Interstate 280 before making his final stop in Oakland on October 24th evening.. In March 1971 Governor Ronald Reagan declared a National Day of Peace with local speeches given throughout Contra Costa County beginning with free morning breakfast at City Hall followed by an afternoon rally opposite campus during which then Mayor Bob Leahy sang "The Star–Shaped Glasses" by Harry Chapin.. The first permanent settlement in what is now Moraga was made by cattlemen from Tehama County in 1873. They named their town after General Mariano Vallejo, who had visited the area earlier that year. The post-World War II boom led to rapid growth and displacement of local residents, and much housing development occurred within walking distance of downtown.
