The Moraga Rifle and Pistol Range is a firearms range located in Moraga, California. The range was opened on October 3, 1950 by Capt. John J. Haggerty. It is the oldest firearm range in Contra Costa County.
Moraga is a small town in California located on the Peninsula of Baja California. The name Moraga comes from the Mexican word "morga" meaning "harvest." The first Europeans to visit what is now Moraga were Portuguese traders who landed in 1769. They named the area San Marcos after St. Martin of Tours, one of their returnees from India. Spanish explorers followed up in 1779 and called the area San Miguel de Tucumán because they had seen a group of people there living off hunting and fishing resources. In 1821, Juan Bautista de Anza visited Moraga and discovered gold near present-day Sonoma County when his ship stopped at anchor on the Jurupa River. This discovery led to the establishment of Santa Fe Springs as an important trade center for Central Californias gold Rush period. The town was founded on October 6, 1859 by James Waddell and his brother George Waddell with help from some 300 settlers who had arrived from Monterey County during that year's Gold Rush. The original town site was located on today's east side of Highway 1 about six miles south of downtown Santa Fe Springs between Ulysses S Grant Road and Prospect Avenue. It grew slowly due to its difficult terrain and lack of water supplies but by 1865 it boasted a population of only fifty-five residents. By 1870, however, Moraga had become an important stop on stagecoach routes connecting Northern California with Mexico City and other parts of North America. During World War II, many Moraga residents served in military units including the United States Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force stationed at nearby Victorville until 1946 when they were replaced by local civilians under Project Mogul which developed airfields adjacent to Template:LocationTemplate:Do not removepx throughout much of Southern California during World War II). After 1945 most businesses closed down or moved out as prices for land increased following various economic changes associated withthe war such as opening up new markets for agriculture following Japan's surrender which resulted in their seizure of Manzanar Naval Base in 1942; newly available acreage (especially along Interstate 5) leading to development; etc.). However, several small businesses managed to survive through post-war competition until recently when agricultural production ceased altogether due to changing soil conditions resulting primarily from overgrazing patterns begun during ranching operations which continue even today although we have taken various steps over recent years to try & address these issues). In 1957 when buses began running between downtown Santa Fe Springs and rural towns inland along I-5 numerous citizens banded together calling themselves "The Citizens' Committee To Save Our Town" because they wanted their community back while also opposing development around them without benefit (or handouts) from either side - something that continues still going On even today! All this time we've been paying taxes just like everyone else...except our landlords! It wasn't until 1990 that theater District decided it would be build a theater within its boundaries so history would have more representation...and moragans reaction was intense! immediate protests ensued all around district HQ where people could see what was being done before their eyes! eventually district withdrew their plans citing financial concerns brought about by increasing development rates within easy driving distance& numerous lawsuits ensuing....(theater District has since built another theater closer to where you live)...and again our reaction has been muted...... Moraga is nestled against mountains immediately adjacent tobordering Routieres National Forest boundary looking out across vast open fields towards Downtown SantaFe Springs whose spires can be seen clearly rising above everything else visible upon arrival especially if one takes Rocky Hill Road exit #2 onto Sunrise Street/Southwest Freeway rushing past picturesque villages perched atop Lookout Mountain continuing onto Open Space Rd.) Although originally founded primarily as livestock ranches focusing principally on beef cattle (rapid growth during 1800s notwithstanding), later enterprises included citrus fruit farming beginning circa 1860; petting zoo established ca 1880; oilfield service station opened circa 1915; mill constructed 1916; telephone office established 1926 (& remains operational); electric light plant built 1933 (& remains operational); hotel constructed 1939 ({[now known as] Renaissance Hotel}); first storehouse erected 1911 (& currently used as garage)); post office building erected 1922 (& current uses as administrative offices)). Today much activity occurs outdoors such as hunting, bird watching, horseback riding & fishing although escape may be found inside both malls (Santafe Springs Shopping Center &moragas High School gymnasium), pubs & restaurants scattered throughout central business district laden with choices typical Californian lifestyle items including fast food joint chainsaws sharpening blades etc.. Contrary to popular belief tho', there are no bars or nightclubs operating within central business district itself despite claims otherwise....... Mall parking lots typically charge $10 per day plus tax while free public transportation options include buses operated by Valley Transit Authority which run every 20 minutes between downtown SantaFe Springs &Downtown Moraga stopping at three different locations inside mall buildings.....Although generally large format stores carrying significant quantities (>80% retail space), discount department stores ("Hafner's", Macy's) operate approximately halfway through each mall….One cannot help but wonder how things might have been different if developers did not chooseto build highrise housing rather than retail venues directly adjacent thereto? Most significantly though,...the fact that almost everything imaginable can be purchased virtually anywhere within close vicinity makes shopping here an extremely reasonable proposition......... A numberof shops offering unique merchandise unavailable elsewherein Central CA are found herein including two independently owned clothing boutiques.......................Today MORAGAS stands apart form otherCentral CA communities largely due its extensive network OF RECYCLING PLANT SERVICES!!! Moraga was founded in 1849 by José Antonio Moraga and his wife Agustina de la Hoz. The first post office at Moraga was established in 1851. In 1865, the Moragas sold their rancho to John C. Fremont for $5,000. After California became a state in 1850, the Moragas re-purchased their land and continued to farm it until they sold it to the United States government for development into Rancho San Joaquin in 1872. The town of Moraga began receiving attention from settlers in the early 1800s when Captain George Vancouver explored and mapped the area around present day Moraga and other locales including Isla Vista on November 21, 1795 while exploring what is now known as The Bay Area of Northern California. At that time Spanish Missionaries were living near Isla Vista with small numbers of Native American inhabitants who were forced to work on their Missions. On September 6, 1821 British explorer Francis Drake sighted this area off the coast of present day San Francisco bay and named it after General José Antonio Moraga who led an expedition against Spanish forces at Monterey Peninsula on July 3, 1821 during Stephens’ Expedition along with Manuel Nieto y Costilla In 1840 Mexican padre Fray Jaime de Jesús Dominguez visited what is now Isla Vista with Father Alonso Suárez who had come across land called “Cuartel” which lay between Presidio Diablo (now part of Hayward) and Alamo Hills north of today’s town of Orinda Fray Diego Pacheco also landed at Laguna Honda east of present site Orinda on March 14th 1850 while attempting to reach Alamo Hill from Presidio Diablo after preaching Christianity to Native Americans thereabouts It has been reported that Juan Bautista Aguilar landed at Laguna Honda sometime before or after February 24th 1850 but no proof exists confirming this claim However according to one source Juan Bautista Aguilar may have landed near where we located Laguna Honda on January 7th 1861 just south of Sacramento Landing which he called La Gaviota due to its similarity in name with Avila Island some distance offshore Jesuit priest Marcos Garcia described La Gaviota as follows: "There are several islands situated about five leagues out from shore...they are all very high cliffs; the largest is Avila (Avila),[which] measures six miles long by three broad." There were also two smaller islands located about one league out from shore - Santa Cruz Island and San Blas Island According to Garcia these smaller islands could be reached only by boat or sailingboat as they were covered by waves most times during high water seasons . Jose Ignacio Gomez later surveyed these lands between Avila island and La Gaviota island claiming them for Mexico under patent number 910 . The Moraga Valley was one of the most heavily hit areas during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The valley is now a part of the San Francisco metropolitan area. In 1847, John Sutter founded the city of Sacramento in what is now California. In 1851, he and his brother-in-law, Peter Bode, founded what is now Fresno; both cities were named for General George Custer. In 1861, James Hetch Hetchy discovered and then developed the gold field at Sierra Nevada County's east end. This led to large improvements in water supplies throughout California as well as various other minerals being found near where Fresno and Sacramento would later be established. By 1870, all of eastern Sierra County had been organized into districts for local government by state legislature under Governor Edmund Sutter. In 1874, two brothers named George Wickersham opened a mercantile business in downtown Sacramento which became known as Wickershams & Company. They continued to grow this business until it merged with another firm in 1912 to become Union Mercantile Company (UAC). UAC grew rapidly thanks to its acquisition of several smaller businesses over the years including: Folsom & DISTRICT WHarf Merchants Association (1887), Hastings Hardware Co.(1896), Highland Woolen Millinery Co.(1902), Security National Bank (1911) and finally Pacific Telephone Company (PTC) in 1922 when that company was spun off from Northern Bell Laboratories. During World War II, many local businesses closed due to wartime rationing but UAC kept going with a reduced workforce due to its divestitures during peacetime. After the war ended in 1945, UAC rebuilt extensively using some proceeds from its divestitures plus new private investment totaling $25 million dollars over 12 years resulting in more than 1,500 jobs created within company walls alone! In 1957 UAC merged with Western Electric Corporation forming one of America's largest electronics companies! "Union Mercantile Company" still stands today as one of Silicon Valley’s most significant commercial institutions--a major player not just in technology but also education and other industries since 1911."
