On February 13, 1846, the Mexican–American War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and Mexico ceded all of California to the United States. On February 27, 1847, President James K. Polk signed into law the Organic Act of 1848 which created Contra Costa County and made it a part of California. In 1862 when General John Custer attacked Sacagawea Creek at Battle of Silliman Ranch near present-day Hercules he lost many men including 7 officers and 100 enlisted men under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer (1831-1918). A plaque at that location commemorates that battle as well as other engagements fought by American forces during The Great American Civil War (1861-1865). This area was then known as "The Gilded Age" because so much wealth had been accumulated in these years due to goldmining operations conducted by both sides in this region; before 1850s gold was only found on an estimated 1/4 mile below ground level in some places while today's gold mine occupies a full acre adjacent to Interstate 5 just east of downtown San Francisco! Several large businesses moved into this area during this time period such as Wells Fargo & Co., Macy’s Department Store (now Macy’s Park), Hearst Corporation’s world Headquarters which occupied most of one block near Stockton Street between Powell and Market Streets for over 50 years until it was demolished in the late 1990s following bankruptcy proceedings; eventually replaced by Apple Inc.'s new headquarters building which opened in 2011! Moraga experienced rapid growth during World War II with many people moving here from outlying rural areas due to service war production shortages caused by Japanese aggression throughout Southeast Asia starting with Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 . Many farms were either destroyed or converted into munitions plants during those years as well; several mills closed because they could not compete with wartime prices for raw materials obtained from Japan . In 1945 local farmers organized themselves into two groups: One group became known as Thefighting Farmers League while the other group became known as The Union Miners Federation . During those years many residents also engaged in checkering activity - playing cards until every card had been played -625 rounds per day! The area that now Moraga was first inhabited by the Ohlone people in the late seventeenth century. In 1848, Moraga came into being when Contra Costa County was founded. The name "Moraga" comes from Mission Santa Clara de Asís (now part of Berkeley), which had been founded in 1776 by Father Jose de la Concepcion y Argumedo. In 1859, local farmers began growing barley for export to China and Japan. When Captain John Fenton discovered oil fields near Moraga in 1901, he founder ChevronTexaco Incorporated here with his partners George Pyle and Irving Oilman. By 1906, Chevron had built an oil refinery and other associated infrastructure here that has helped make Moraga one of California's most prosperous communities. The discovery of oil here led to the growth of nearby Richmond as an agricultural center during World War II while Walnut Creek became a hub for manufacturing during the postwar period. After years of steady growth throughout the 1970s and 1980s due to increased petroleum production in California's Central Valley – one result of which was increased traffic on Interstate 80 – growth stopped in the early 1990s as energy prices plummeted and joblessness began to increase across many industries statewide. However, since 2000 notable development has occurred including new housing developments such as Oak Knoll Village; a new elementary school; a shopping mall; and two major movie theaters: Regal Cinemas (the largest movie theater chain in North America) and Hollywood Palladium Movie Ranch (the largest multi-screen theatre system east of Los Angeles). A variety of businesses have also moved into Moraga over time including restaurants such as Olive Garden/Pizza Place/Rosati's Italian Restaurant/Eaton Bros./Fountainview Grill; health clubs such as WellnessWorksClub/Sultan Fitness; pet stores including Petco Park & Doggie Daycare Center; auto parts stores including MidasPartsAndAccessories(now Sears); grocers such as Safeway(now Kroger) ;and engineering firms such as Schlumberger(now Baker Hughes) . In addition, numerous high-end residences have been built along El Camino Real between Menlo Park Boulevard eastward towards San Mateo County or just west off Highway 101 between San Pablo Bayou Road northward towards Hayward international Airport or south onto Interstate 680 within minutes' driving distance from either Menlo Park or San Francisco International Airport - making Moraga one of Northern California's most affluent areas
In 1847, the first post office in Moraga was established. The town would grow rapidly thanks to its location near San Francisco Bay and its access to the railroad. By 1884, Moraga had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1905, Moraga was annexed by Fresno County and became part of that county's capital city. However, due to its size and geographic isolation, Moraga continued to maintain a separate government until 1949 when it joined the larger city of Fresno.
