In 1923, construction began on what would become the most important highway connection between Fresno and Sacramento - I-5. The road became known as "the Main Street Project" because much of it was built with local labor withoutborrowing money from either city leaders or taxpayers. The first Europeans to encounter what is now Moraga were Mexican traders traveling eastward from San Diego in search ofcedes Copper mines at La Veta de la Baca near present-day Los Angeles. They noted that there appeared to be enormous amounts of gold hereabouts but no one had tried to find it because it seemed too difficult to get at without getting lost in some miles-long desert trackless wastes between mountains rangesblanketing this section of California so far northward from any other known landmass. Captain John Sutter led his party overland from Monterey on February 17, 1853, after finding good supplies for their journey back home across the Central Valley into northern California through Yosemite National Park - a distance only about 130 miles (190 kilometers). He named this new region La Plata County after himself and reported finding great concentrations of ore near present day Crystal Springs (northwest corner), Nevada Mines (southwest corner), Mathersville (east side)and Yreka (southwest corner). A few days later he discovered several buildings with evidences that people were living hereabouts: Indian wigwams or huts made out of reed filled with earth and covered with straw; ovens or firingplaces built above these huts; game animals such as horses being pastured outside; human habitation consisting essentially of twoadobe buildings erected about 1840 for military captain Folsom who had taken possessionof these prospecting areas adjacent to what are now downtown Los Angeles A few weeks later Captains Sutter and Hudnut discovered another building which they thought might be occupied by Indians but no Indians were seen inside or around it so they abandoned this exploration area until further notice . Soon afterward Captain James Cushing joined Captains Sutter & Hudnut on their expedition while they were still exploring northeast corner where they found evidence that 500 men under General Mariano Vallejo had recently started mining copper ores northeast off Big Sur coast Several weeks passed before anyone returned eastward reporting anything more significant than packrats infesting some earlier discoveries nearpresent day Las Vegas Lieutenant George Wittenberg mounted an effort starting March 3rd1854to push southward along current US Route 66 adjoining Kings Canyon National Park discovering vast quantities both silver & gold mineralized surfaces withinitas vast empty stretches withindays travel making him one Of America’s first professional geologists . Lt Wittenberg also reported seeing huge herds(upwards thousands)of bighorn sheep roaming freely throughout Mountainside Gulch which stretched below his camp site deep intonow
Moraga was founded in 1849 by the Moraga Band of Mission Indians. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Sacramento River, and soon boasted a library, school, hospital, and other public buildings. In 1872, the Moraga Indian Reservation was established nearby, and the town began to lose its importance. It remained an unimportant community until the late 19th century when it began to experience rapid growth as a result of new transportation connections and agricultural production. The town reached its peak population in 1910 with over 25 thousand residents. However, during World War II the town experienced significant decline as a result of military occupation and natural disasters. It regained its former level of prosperity during the postwar period but declined again in the late 20th century due to economic stagnation and population decline.Today, Moraga is an inactive village located within Oakland County
