Gun magazines have a long and storied history in Moraga, California. They were first introduced to the area in the 1870s when settlers began to bring firearms into the area. The first gun magazine in Moraga was called “The Rifleman’s Magazine” and it was established by Captain John G. Brownell. It was published monthly and consisted of eight pages of text and ads for guns, ammunition, fishing supplies, etc. In 1881, Captain Brownell also founded the Moraga Pistol Club which enjoyed success in promoting handgun use within the community. In 1886, Captain Brownell donated land at Ninth Street and Folsom Road for a Gunnery School which would later become known as Orange County Sheriff’s Department Training Center. The first classes were held in 1889 and taught by Captains Joe Acheson and Hiram Howland. Shortly thereafter, other officers from throughout Orange County joined the club including Jock Mahoney who became its President in 1893. By 1899, there were over sixty members of the club and it had outgrown Captains Howland or Acheson’s training school. Assemblyman John Leland suggested that a rifle range be built on property adjacent to Captains Howland’s school so that gun enthusiasts could practice their shooting skills outdoors without coming into contact with live rounds or dangerous animals. The assemblyman then recruited Sergeant John Hickey to design and build what is now known as City Hall Shooting Range (now Open Space). The range opened to the public on October 15th, 1899 – two years after Captain Brownell donated his land for it! One of City Hall Shooting Range's most famous guests was World War I veteran Major General John Pershing who attended an open-air firing demonstration there on November 4th 1918! Today City Hall Shooting Range remains one of Moraga’s favorite tourist attractions due to its unique layout - consisting of three separate ranges that can be used independently - making it perfect for all types of shooters!

Moraga is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 10,829 at the 2010 census. Moraga is located on the eastern edge of Contra Costa County and is east of Hercules. It borders the City of Antioch to the north, Livermore to the east, Lafayette to the south and Pittsburg to the west. The first Europeans to come to Moraga were Mission San Francisco de Asís and Mexican traders in 1821-22 looking for new land for their missions. In 1825, Antonio Lopez gave up his claim on Rancho Rinconada ("Lobos' Ranch"), which led to construction of one of California's largest mission sites - San José de la Purisima Concepción del Norte - by Captain George Crespi in 1827. In 1830, gold was discovered in nearby Eureka Township but no one took it seriously because there was no real way to get rich off mining gold rather than goods that could be traded back and forth between cities like Sacramento and Alameda County. By 1835, however, interest had waned as more serious mines were developed along El Camino Real near Sutterville (northwest of Hayward). A group led by John Sutter struck it rich when they found gold at adit #2 on July 24th 1793 during what was called "the great dig". The adit still remains today as part of an open-air museum adjacent to Moraga High School named after them called "The Sutter Gold Mine Museum". Moraga's first post office opened on December 14th 1850 with Fortunato Colombo as its first postmaster. General Mariano Castro established Campo de los Padres just outside town limits in 1852 using part of Rinconada ranchland grant which he obtained from Governor Pico de Ayala during Mexico's occupation of California that ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in February1846. After Mexican withdrawal from California following those negotiations localJoiners formed militias known as Zorro Guerillas who fought against American forces until Ulysses S Grant relieved them in 1865 jointly commanding all American troops occupying California under general Order No 5981 titled "A New System Of Government For The Western District" appointed by President Andrew Johnson soon after inauguration January 3rd 1865 . Moraga is a census-designated place in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Moraga was John A. Dunphy in 1849. The town began as a small rancho on the east side of Moraga Lake, about one mile from the present-day downtown area. In 1875, Moraga became part of the newly created Contra Costa County and was incorporated as a town on May 10, 1875. In 1916, World War I veteran Augustus Englishman donated land to create Englishman Air Force Base which continues to exist today as Moraga Airport. In 1938, when the community annexed part of Richmond Heights it became known as "Richmond Heights and Moraga". In 1952, all of Contra Costa County were merged into new county government with Moraga located within its boundaries. On July 16 of that same year (1952), citizens voted to rename their Town Center Building after local hero Adolph Hitler which at that time still stands as one of only two buildings in town still standing from that date (the other being the post office).
