In 1943 WWII veteran Harry Saucier established Saucier Air Force Base (now Joint Base Lewis-McChord) just east of town on agricultural land donated by his family just north of Interstate 5. Today's economy largely revolves around agriculture with some light industry such as manufacturing chicken feed or cheese.
