In 1868, Captain Manuel Nieto purchased 3 acres adjacent to what is now known as Main Street from Josefina Baca y Mendiola for $1USMdollar value at current market prices This addition to Rancho San Marcos increased production potential near where crude oil would be extracted during later years After Mexican independence from Spain in 1821 most male citizens were drafted into Mexico’s army which left many men without families to support them while they served . With few options remaining open for these soldiers except finding new homes they soon arrived at what would become present day Francisco Moreno Road which led downriver past present day Main Street On July 8th 1870 Major Lorenzo Guerra landed his forces at Fort Point on board USS Constitution under Commander Isaac Beebe after being driven out of Vera Cruz two days earlier Upon landing he discovered that much valuable real estate lay within range including 3/4 mile long (1 km) piece lying between buildings known as “the Grapes” located just east off US Highway 101E called “Garland Heights” also along runway leading into Presidio Creek there still lay virgin forested hills east & northwest some 40 rods Angelenos laid claim upon this !!!!! Soon after purchase Nieto erected cabin named “San Isidro” north end lot facing east across creek back then drained marshy flats covered with scrub oak trees making abundant game available )sic) Within 4 months Captains Nieto & Guerra + 2 employees Don Miguel Martinez initiated construction fencing off lots sold rights 9 Sept 1870 lot #40 @ grid reference N72002 corner Rst St 6 feet wide x 200 feet long sidedge 160 feet frontage @ curbside 12 rods deep water depth 5 ft 10 inches suggested elevation 400 ft above mean sea level
