Moraga is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, located southeast of Stockton. The population was 1,568 at the 2010 census. Moraga's history dates back to 1848, when it was part of Rancho Moral de Don Pedro and was named for José Margarita Moraga y Linares, who had married an Englishman. In 1871, the town became a city and has since grown to become one of the most populous cities in Northern California. The first resident of Moraga was José Francisco Martinez, who arrived in 1848 as part of Rancho Moral de Don Pedro. Martinez founded what is now downtown Moraga on December 12th of that year with seven other families from Rancho San Bruno northwest of Sacramento. In 1850, Antonio Canessa settled near the present day intersection of State Route 99 and General Grant Boulevard on what is now east side property owned by descendants of Canessa. On October 14th, 1860 Jose Gomez Settles along CR 128 south east corner lot on current siteof City Hall In 1872 Antonio Canessa donated land north-northwest (now east side)of present day Civic Center for a public square which would become known as "Canessa Square". The townspeople voted to name their new city after Antonio Canessa on November 15th1872 and incorporation took place two days later under the name "Moraga" On May 7th1893 Moraga lost its status as a city after voters rejected Proposition H (An Act To Consolidate And improve Streets And Buildings Of The City Of Moraga) because they felt it did not provide enough services such as water rates or streetlights needed for an increasingly populous community . After losing its status as a city, Moraga adopted a new Constitution providing for representation through appointed committees rather than individual votes . On July 24 th1911 City Council renamed themselves "The Mayor and Aldermen" effective immediately following incorporation into the State of California In 1918 Joe Garcia purchased title to parcels extending from west side Main Street through today's Slauson Avenue allthe way to Elmira Road from his father-in-law Manuel Sanchez - this included almost alllying land between Slauson Ave & Elmira Rd including much now within boundaries OFSDEMANDED PARCEL
The Moraga Valley was home to the Ohlone people for more than 10,000 years. The area was first occupied by the indigenous peoples of Northern California. The Ohlone people were a branch of the Coast Miwok people and their territory extended from what is now central Marin County east to southern San Francisco Bay and into present-day Nevada and Oregon. They used fire as their primary tool for food production, clothing and shelter, and constructed simple villages thatched with acacia bark. In 1776, Spanish colonists founded Mission San José de la Ribera in what is now Moraga Valley. In 1815, the United States acquired much of California through the Mexican War when Mexico ceded it to America on terms that included large tracts of land in present-day Los Angeles County and part of Orange County. The Moraga Valley became part of Los Angeles County in 1821. The early settlers in the Moraga Valley were generally poor farmers who relied heavily on seasonal rainfall for crops and animal husbandry. Over time, however, some families developed successful businesses including a distillery operated by Captain John Day during the late 1800s; a sawmill established by David Jones in 1834; a zinc mine opened in 1868; a flour mill built by George Wigginton in 1889; an agricultural fair each year at various locations throughout the valley until 1940; and numerous small schools that servedangerous areas within Los Angeles County until shortly before World War II. Many residents also engaged in heavy industry such as smelting operations at nearby Mount Wilson or aluminum production at Carlsbad Caverns National Park. During World War II there was significant military activity taking place around Larchmont Road (now North Hollywood Boulevard) which led down into Moraga Valley from Palmdale along with other valleys near Malibu Hills where many American soldiers had been quartered after being liberated from Japanese POW camps during World War II
