Moorpark, California is a city in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 27,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles–Long Beach metropolitan area and its largest economic sector is high-tech businesses. Moorpark was named after Anthony Wayne Moorhouse, an American explorer who explored this region in 1824. The town site was purchased by John C. Fremont in 1853 and became part of the newly created Los Angeles County; Moorpark annexed nearby Diamond Bar in 1912. The post office opened in 1856 and continued operation until it closed on July 14, 1974. The first store built in Moorpark was a general store called "The General Store" on North Main Street which operated from 1865 to 1870. In 1875, three years after incorporation as a city, the first municipal building (then known as City Hall) was erected on what is now Second Avenue West; it served as both City Hall and Police Department Headquarters until 1911 when it burned down. In 1911, Mayor James Whelan organized a citizens’ committee to study plans for new civic buildings; their recommendation resulted in the erection of a new Municipal Building on East First Avenue which still serves as City Hall today. On November 15, 1912 Moorpark annexed neighboring Diamond Bar with effect from that date; during annexation there were no street renaming or other changes taking place within the city limits of Moorpark itself other than adding an eastward extension to Second Avenue west of Highland Boulevard (now Ventura Boulevard). In 1951 Alderman Harry Jaffe introduced legislation providing for community services such as water and sewer service within city limits without charge to residents; this legislation failed but led eventually to passage by the City Council of Measure R (1955) which provided for free municipal services through Meter Reading Districts throughout single-member cities with a population over 50 thousand inhabitants regardless of race or color excepting those located insideLos Angeles County where service would be provided by county personnel only under specific circumstances authorized by statute.–City Manager Harry Jaffe had been appointed Deputy Director CRA/CAL/Parks & Recreation

The first settlers to the area were William Hays and his brothers who arrived around 1847. They named their land Rancho San Marcos after Padre José Escobar de la Vega who had donated land to them in 1846. It wasn’t until 1861 that any development occurred with two families moving into a cabin near present-day downtown Moorpark from Isleton Road east of Yerba Buena Creek. The first post office opened in 1865 and it would remain open until 1899 when it moved to its current location south of Main Street. In 1887, Ned Blythe established Moorpark as a small town located on rancho san Marcos which he acquired from Santiago Carrillo while serving as president of Mexican Land Company Agrícola Mexicana (L&N). Upon his death in 1888, his wife Agnes took over management of the community and people began to arrive from all over Northern California to settle there including many Californians who had left during the Gold Rush era. By 1890, there were about twenty residents living in what became known as “Moorpark Heights” with most working local farms or ranching operations supplying food for cattle drives across central butte County every springtime accompanying prospectors out onto the main ridges between Cascade Mountains and Sacramento Valley Among these early pioneers were Jens Jensen (1853-1927), son of Danish immigrant Anders Jensen; Johnnie Smedley (1857-1928); Hiram Morse (1858-1941); Fenton Mowry (1863-1951); Chauncey Norris(1865-1945) ; Wm Hays(1867-1920) ; Matthias Schmidt (born c 1870 – died 1939) ; August Wilhelm Schaefer(born 1830 – died 1912) Olson family also settled hereometime before 1880s: Emmett Olson arriving circa 1870; Kate Olsen arriving c 1880; George Olsen arrival date unknown; Nora Olsen arriving c1900 In 1895 an act entitled "An Act Providing For The Formation Of A Municipal Corporation And Incorporating The Town Of Moorpark" was passed by Assembly Bill No 529 by then Speaker James Gibbons with Senators Leland Stanford Daily and Charles Evans Hughes voting against it however they did not veto it because they believed that incorporation would be good for business rather than social welfare purposes In 1898 town voters approved an ordinance providing for school board members being elected instead of appointed by county commissioners seats remained vacant until 1905 when James Purdy succeeding Gibbons assumed leadership setting off another round of civic reform including mayoral elections held in 1909 An even more radical action taken during this time period called for night classes only for men which quickly proved unpopular leading to Purdy’s resignation later that year following public outcry In 1911 driveway paving began along Main Street between 5th Avenue & State Route 395 becoming an important economic sector within the community especially due to railroad construction passing through town At this point law enforcement duties shifted from sheriff’s offices located north of town towards downtown where City Hall now stands additional industries developed such as textiles Manufacturing started up within community during 1920s thanks largely to new technology imported from America Leadmining commencedSeveral other businesses also opened up during this time including Butte Tool & Supply Co., NelsonsBeauty Salon & Barbershop among others Priorities quickly changed starting around 1930 when military base Clark Air Force Baseopened nearby draw jobs transitioned away from agriculture manufacturing stopped entirely leaving town briefly prospering before returning back into obscurity after World War II
