Moorpark, California is a small town in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pasadena-Monterey Park-Anaheim, CA metropolitan area. Moorpark is located in east-central Los Angeles County and west of downtown LA. The first known inhabitants of what is now Moorpark were Native Americans who lived on the Rancho de la Paloma grant which was given to them by Governor Felipe de Neve in 1781. later that year they were replaced by Mexican settlers who built a rancho on the site where Moorpark now stands. In 1851, Major General Winfield Scott named thissite "Moorpark" after his home state of Missouri. The town's name has been changed several times over its history including "Pine Grove", "Garden Grove", and finally "Moorpark". In 1909, J. Peebles organized a group of investors to develop what would become known as Southern Pacific Railroad land where they planned to build a depot and station as well as create a new city called Torrance which would be north of present day Moorpark on Interstate 10 (the old alignment). The project failed and Peebles returned to his original idea but died before it could be completed. In 1915 earthquake drillers discovered oil shale under the surface near present day Moorpark Boulevard and Imperial Avenue and began drilling for oil in 1916; however no wells were ever drilled because there was no available water or gas supply to support such an operation beyond today’s boundaries

In 1913 the name of the city changed to honor Colonel John Tipton (1858-1935), who had served as Commandant of the San Francisco Barracks during World War I and later served as Mayor of Oakland. In 1951 work began on building what would become known as "Moorpark Center", which would house a number of businesses including Jiffy Lube & Co., National Broadcasting Company (NBC), Sears Roebuck & Co., Dodge Brothers Department Store (now Macy's) and many more over its years of occupancy. In 1984 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today Moorpark is home to several major retailers such as Sears Holdings Corporation's Kmart store, Macy's department store and two Ford car dealerships; both located within walking distance from one another along North First Street near Interstate 580/I-580 East exit 5176/. In addition there are several small businesses located around town that provide services such as Farmers' Market gardening or pet grooming services etc.; making it an excellent place for local shopping with plenty to do within easy proximity!
Moorpark was founded by James H. Moor in 1887. The first post office at Moorpark was established in 1889. In 1923, the town was incorporated and it became a city in 1951.
