Moorpark was founded on November 12, 1911, as a result of a merger of two small villages: Moorpark Heights and Grant Park. In 1920, it merged with neighboring La Veta to become one municipality. The City of Moorpark has jurisdiction over all of unincorporated areas within its borders. The City's land boundaries are defined by three neighborhoods: Eastside Village (west of Rialto Avenue), Middle Village (east of Rialto Avenue), and Westside Village (northwest of Vine Street). The City limits were established in 1915 when portions of La Veta were annexed into Moorpark as part of the creation of the new city government following a referendum vote by residents seeking annexation into Moorpark Heights. At that time, there were only two businesses located within Moorpark limits- The Hardware Store on Main Street and Mrs. Fryer's bakery on Elwood Avenue- both closed upon incorporation into the new city government which also included Grant Park as well as other smaller villages such as Eastside and Middle Village which then became wards within the newly formed municipal government. In 1920 following another referendum vote asking for an increase in municipal services to include sewer service and streetlights within town limits, La Veta was annexed once again into Moorpark Heights creating what is now known as Eastside Village while Grant Park became known as Middle Village followed by West Side village which today remains present day an unincorporated area located north east from downtown LA including parts of Chavez Ravine which straddlesLA county line between LA and San Bernardino counties

The town was founded by George Wickersham and his wife Lucilla Ayer on May 25, 1887. Wickersham had come from Illinois and left behind a large family farmstead near Gormanville which he purchased from the Hensley family for $4 per acre. He named his new community after Englishman Richard Moor (1768-1834), who had come to California in 1797 as part of an abortive effort to found a colony in what is now Orange County. Wickersham's original home stood on the current site of Town Hall and remains standing today as part of the museum complex that includes Wickersham House National Historic Site and the George Wickersham Place Heritage Park.Lucilla Ayer moved into her own home at 7th Street & Avenue K shortly after their arrival and soon began various important civic activities including serving as Mayor of Moorpark from 1898 until her death in 1902; she also served asectress for public schools for many years before that date. In 1904 she donated land northeast of town to become what is now Riverside Drive Extension Park which still serves dual purposes as a residential area with playgrounds open to all ages while also hosting meetings/events related to civic life during park hours; one can only imagine how much more valuable it would have been if it were exclusively dedicated to cultural uses! In 1916, Rufus Peck established Peck’s Drug Store at 9th Street & Avenue K which became one of the most popular stores in town because it sold both groceries and medicines without taking any profit off its sales to its customers who paid with cash or checks drawn on local banks Peter Baca operated another store called “Baca” across street at 11st Street & Avenue K Owned by Vito Baca until his death young Johnnie Johnson operated a grocery store just south side Of The Post Office until 1938 when he relocated across Santa Anita Boulevard into what is now known as “Johnson’s Garden” later known simply as “Johnson’s Grocery Store” During World War II rationing caused many businesses within sight or sound of military installations throughout Southern California close but not really affected by those restrictions other than having their prices lowered making them less profitable however “Gardening Supply Company” located next door remained open without interruption until 1978 when Desert Sun Newspapers bought out Johnson's Garden Limited Partnership resulting in closed shop For several years there wasn't even an operating business inside Of City Limits due To lack Of Available Land However recent purchases by LLC owner Donny Levine finally brings back operation And reopened shop early this year (2015) adjacent To City Limits High School Please visit our website www .
