Moorpark is a town in Orange County, California. It was founded in 1853 as a small farming village on the Model T Ranch of James Fenton. Moorpark became an incorporated town on December 6, 1903. The population was 27,713 at the 2010 census. The name "Moorpark" comes from the Spanish word for "mountain." In 1853, James Fenton discovered gold in what is now Moorpark and named his discovery after the mountain range across which he saw it. He sold some of his land to various miners and prospectors over the next few years until he realized that there was no gold worth finding in this area. In 1857, while working on his ranch near Cucamonga, Fenton found more gold and named his new discovery after himself - Moorpark. Over time, other people began to discover other valuable minerals in these parts including silver and lead. In 1902, incorporation of Moorpark happened with many people contributing money to get it done quickly and without much opposition. In 1923, Leland Stanford bought part of the Rancho San Bernardino de la Vieja Surveyor's Office which lay east of present-day Moorpark along Interstate 10 (the old route between Pasadena and Orange) for $170 million dollars making him one of history's largest landowners ever at that time. This grazing ground had been claimed by several groups since 1790 when Spanish Missionaries first set foot in what is now Orange County. At its peak during World War II it held 5 million acres (2 million hectares), encompassing most of today's Central Valley area north of Interstate 805 Some development took place prior to Mr Stanford's purchase but little progress occurred until after WWII when millions came into focus due to new technology developments such as TV production plants outside Los Angeles However following political changes that followed World War II which favored suburban growth instead of agricultural production like Mr Stanford wanted; much rural land throughout Southern California changed hands through eminent domain laws during the 1950s thru 1970s as developers sought access to urban areas for suburban housing By 1980 only 2/3rds (of all surface mining activity) still took place within commuting distance either inside or outside Los Angeles city limits according to recent surveys Bureau Of Mines & Geology Archives Consequently by 1990 surface mining had largely stopped although underground coalmining continues intermittently . There are several reasons why this has occurred: 1) technological advances have made it possible to extract more minerals using less environmental impact; 2) relatively low prices for natural resources once they are extracted make them very affordable for anyone able to engage in mining practices; 3) federal regulations ban open-pit mines even where used mineral wealth exists; 4) public opposition has arisen from concerns about health risks associated with exposure especially ifunused mine sites are located close unto populated areas
