As early as 1891 Mourak had been known for its red Mulberry trees, which were grown for their fruit rather than their wood used for fuel or lumber. By 1916, however, all production had stopped because of World War I; only 6 trees remained after the war ended. In 1923 there was an oil well drilled in nearby Manteca and began production that led to development around it including new housing developments such as The Lakeshore apartments complex built in 1951 on what had been part of an old dairy farmstead/ranch complex purchased by Harry Chandler from his parents in 1922. These developments also created many jobs within the community during this time period as well as attracting other businesses to town such as First National Bank & Trust Company which opened its doors in 1951 and became one of the most popular retailers in town until it closed its doors in 1984 due to economic conditions throughout much Southern California at that time *. In 1912, the first high school in Moorpark opened and served students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. In 1916, a Methodist church was built on East White Street in Moorpark and is still used today as a religious center. In 1924, the first shopping center was built in Moorpark and it remains one of the most popular shopping destinations in town today. In 1970, the community welcomed its first movie theater when Regal Cinemas opened on North White Street. The theatre has since been replaced by a variety of other types of entertainment venues over the years including an arena/club house which now operates as a Senior Center, music venues (including two amphitheatres), and more recently, apartments and condos have begun to fill the site once occupied by Regal Cinemas.
