Moorpark is a town in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 9,721 at the 2010 census. Moorpark is located east of Fresno and west of Bakersfield. Moorpark was founded in 1887 by Mormon settlers who had been driven out of East Texas by the Mexican War. The original name for Moorpark was Ector. In 1912, the Town Board changed its name to Moorpark after real estate developer J.D. Power and Company donated land for the town center on State Route 41. The first post office opened in Moorpark on November 1, 1887 under the name Cimarron Springs; it closed on October 15, 1909 due to low mail volume. The first store in town was converted into a restaurant called "Moor Park Cafe" in 1896 and operated until 1926 when it became "The Girdler". In 1907, Edison Electric Illuminating Company built a new power plant near present-day downtown Moorpark which allowed for an increase in population and businesses within two decades with investments totaling $2 million ($ when adjusted for inflation). With this new source of income, the townspeople were able to build a school (1910), fire hall (1912), garage (1920), library (1924), water tower (1927), wells (1929) and other infrastructure such as Streetscape No. 2 which curves around downtown from south to north just east of First Avenue S/R between Administration Road SE and Elm Street NE In 1932–33 Mayor Harry Daugherty proposed that all streets be named after American states – Nevada being chosen – but this plan failed to gain favor among residents or get state funding for implementation despite numerous petitions from city officials including Daugherty himself In 1935–36 Mayor John Hickey proposed that all streets be named after American cities with no success either After mayor Hickey's death in 1937 his successor City Councilman William Pugh voted against naming any street after an American city even though many wanted him to do so because they felt it would help promote local businesses . However councilman Pugh later regretting his decision attributed this lack of enthusiasm towards naming streets solely to Hickey's death rather than anything else during his tenure as mayor
