Moorpark is a city in San Bernardino County, California. Moorpark's population was 34,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Moorpark was George Wickersham, who arrived on horseback on November 10, 1849. He and his family were the first white people to reside in what would become Moorpark. Wickersham named his new land Canoga Park after two canoes he had seen while exploring Point Loma near San Diego. In 1850, James Blythe settled in what would become Moorpark and founded the Blythe School district which later became Yeshiva University Southwestern California Campus (now known as UCLA). The City of Los Angeles annexed portions of Owens Valley east of Pasadena on January 1, 1912 and took over much of the civic infrastructure including water systems and public transportation inside City limits. In 1915–16 Jules Stein erected a farmstead just south of present-day downtown Moorpark on section 822 (now Orchard) Road for $3 per acre ($ in 2019 dollars). The tract was so large it required severalPurchase Blocks to be acquired from other landowners before it could be developed; only three blocks were ultimately purchased by Stein but all are extant today within walking or biking distance of one another: Canoga Avenue between Fairfax Drive and Lankershim Boulevard (northwest corner), First Street between Ontario Avenue and Lankershim Boulevard (southwest corner), Green Boulevard east of Lankershim Boulevard (east side), and Orchard Road between Fairfax Drive and Lankershim Boulevard (northwest corner). The final Purchase Block was acquired from developer Harry Kessler during construction of Interstate 5 North about 1980 when he donated nearly 400 acres north of Ventura Freeway to designated parkland with an entrance off I-5 northbound exit lanes east of Highway 101 freeway mainline; this parcel forms most modern day Embarcadero Center area within downtown Moorpark boundaries.. Moorpark residents voted to annex nearby Carpinteria on October 6, 1920 following passage by a vote Of 3-to-1 that MorPark should have its own police department "since there exists no law enforcement service provided by either the city or county." On December 2nd1920 Mayor Edward J. Davis signed legislation creating Carpinteria’s first municipal government with powers similar to those enjoyed by cities such as Los Angeles or Pasadena.. Moorpark proper began settlement around 1851 when George Wickersham came across 640acre grant from Mexican Ute Chief Manuel Micheltorena along Umatilla Creek east side ol town center
