Monterey, California is a town located in San Diego County, California. It is the third-largest city in San Diego County after Tijuana and Imperial Beach. The population of Monterey was 881 as of 2010. Monterey has been inhabited by Native Americans for Thousands of years and it was purchased by Mexico in 1821. The U.S. Navy built Fort Myer at Monterey in 1846 as part of their warship buildup against Mexico. In 1870, the United States acquired title to the land from Mexico through an agreement with Mission Santa Cruz de la Frontera which had been founded by American missionaries in 1795. From 1872 to 1876, the U.S Army used Monterey Naval Air Station as a base for flights into water missions during World War I and World War II due to its location at latitude 40°N/Longitude 122°W (the area now known as Point Conception). In 1946, the air station was closed down and turned over to the Coast Guard which operates it today as part of naval station Lompoc Bay which also includes Point Conception State Beach and several other coastline areas across Northern California

Today’s economy depends largely on ranching and other agricultural activities; however infrastructure projects such as Interstate 5 have helped improve transportation links between central California and other parts of the state while preserving historical sites like Historic Adobe Walls National Monument nearby
