The Monterey Peninsula was known for its wine country and beaches until the early 20th century. However, the area now comprising Monterey County was first inhabited by Native Americans. By 1836, Spanish fishermen had discovered oil seeps in the waters off of Santa Cruz and began to explore these resources with their boats. The firstyntory of shooting games taking place on these coasts date back to this time. A game called “Throwing Stones” took place on a small island in the harbor of San Francisco during the 1850s. In 1858, Sheriff George White caught three men throwing stones at each other near what is now Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey Harbor. Wolkentin's heirs continued developing it until 1978 when they sold it to developer Irwin Jacobs for $275 million.Jacobs turned it into one of Silicon Valley's most startup-friendly neighborhoods with large amounts of open space and easy access to highways; he also built a new seawall around Downtown Monterey which helped reduce flooding during heavy storms in recent years.
