In 1957 Monterey became part of California's newly formed State University System; it remains so today with over 60 colleges and universities within its borders In 1824 Francisco Pacheco founded a mission at Rancho El Camino Real (later Mission San Miguel Arcángel), about 8 miles northeast of present-day Monterey village center on Cape Cod Sound between Salinas and Isla Vista Pacheco designated two Sites of historical interest: Point Conception () on top of Ptarmigan Hill overlooking Rancho San Ignacio () about midway along Coast Ranges Road from Salinas towards Big Sur In 1835 Mexican Antonio José de Arguello took possession of Rancho El Camino Real from Pacheco after a land dispute He named it pueblo de la Purísima Concepción y Justicia (), or "Holy Conception and Justice". A plaque marking that site still stands near Interstate 5 just south of Paso Robles Boulevard outside the city limits of Carmelita . The second Site was located at Ptarmigan Hill nearpresent-dayPtarmigan Beach on Cape Cod Sound immediately offshore from Point Conception Only one building remains standing on this Site which was built as an adobe farmstead by Spanish families who purchased land around 1836: La Casa Blanca (). There are no visible ruins remaining but several hundred artifacts have been excavated including pottery sherds, shell middens, Victrolas,, guitars, saddles... These findings led to renewed interest in this area among archaeologists throughout America . No fewer than thirteen archaeological investigations were conducted between 1978-'84 owing much more specifically to efforts sponsored by then Director Joel Wilkinson (now at UC Berkeley) under Edward Crain’s auspices which included aerial mapping
