The population of Monterey peaked at over 100,000 during World War II when many veterans returned home from military service in Japan and Europe. But since then its population has slowly declined due to waves of migration from other parts of California and abroad. Today about 40% of its residents are British Americans; 30% are Californians (excluding Native American peoples); 10% are foreign nationals; 10% are low-income citizens; 6% are Hispanics or Latinos (of any race); 2% are African Americans; 1% are Asians Pacific Islanders). Today's economy is based largely on tourism which brings more than $2 billion annually into town coffers
