This discovery led to large-scale mining operations and made Monterey Peninsula an important center for silver production until it stopped in 1870 due to overpopulation and poor soil conditions. In 1876, General Alvaro Obregón captured Santa Cruz River Valley during what is now known as The Great Race for Ranchos--a campaign that aimed to take control of all land south of San Francisco Bay by force if necessary. The resulting Treaty of Arroyo Seco recognized Spanish sovereignty over much of the peninsula but did not mention silver or gold mining
