Monterey, California is a small town located on Monterey Peninsula in San Diego County. The town was founded in 1849 by Captain John Brougham and his wife, Mary Ann Brougham. The first post office was opened in 1852. In 1876, Monterey became the county seat of San Diego County. The population of Monterey declined from its peak at 100,000 in 1930 to just over 50,000 by 1990. However, the fortunes of Monterey have waxed and waned throughout its history as agricultural production has changed and new technologies have arrived. The development of citrus culture began with two Spanish missionaries who came to California in 1769 and 1770, Pedro Menéndez de Avila and José Antonio Gaspar de Portolá. They were the first Europeans to see fruit trees growing wild along the coast of Southern California. From their experience they developed a way to transport wine from Spain back up the coast without shipwrecking or sailing around Cape Horn. In 1792 they built a winery at Carmel which became one of the most important grape-growing areas in California because it had good soil quality for grapes and good irrigation techniques; also it produced high-quality wines that sold well both at home and abroad. It took about sixty years before vines could be grown successfully on large tracts of land west of downtown Los Angeles; this resulted in increased demand for wine from local consumers as well as international buyers looking for varietal quality wines not found elsewhere on the continent. By 1850 there were some 3,500 people living in Montereytown proper – an area now bounded by First Street (north), Third Street (east), Pierce Street (south), and King Drive (west). Until about 1850s much grew hereabouts only barley straw for furnishings & matting; fishing does take place off shore but meager catches so no real economy started until white traders bring—good catch!” One interesting note about early life hereabouts is that quite a few early settlers must have come ashore during times when ships anchored offshore due to dangerous sea conditions including dangerous Swellwater ("high water") crossings which can occur during storms or periods where waves exceed normal height: "In fact many residents who would later become famous such as Will Rogers still lived close by aboard ships docked offshore."
